Dodgers To Efflcet Redlegs
Dn.ioiyiblleheader Tonight
Cincinnati (UPI) The
Los Angeles Dodgers, who
plunged into the league cellar
in May and stayed there, meet
Cincinnati's Redlegs today in
a twi-night doubleheader.
Don Drysdale, a 17-game
winner in 1957 but holder of a
record this season, was
named to start in the opener
with rookie lefthander Bob
Giallombardo taking the
mound for Los Angeles in the
second game.
The Redlegs selected Bob
Purkey (8-3) and Willard
Schmidt (2-2) for Cincinnati
mound chores. Manager Walt

Washington (UPI) The

sides today in a battle over
how far Congress should go
in applying anti-trust laws to
professional sports.
The battle was scheduled to
reach the debating stage on
the house floor today with no
finfj votes expected until
Wednesday.
There were three major
sides to the fight: a judiciary
committee bill pushed by
Chairman Emanuel Cellar (D-
N.Y.);oand a compromise be
tween the two proposed by
Rep. Albert W. Cretella (R
Conn.).
Cellar said he expected "a
little trouble" with his own
measure but would keep fight
ing for it. He said Keating's
proposal would give organized
baseball a "carte blanche" to
develop restrictive practices,
For example, he said, -the Yan
kees could keep any other
team out of New York under
Keating's plan.
But Keating, the senior Re
publican on . the judiciary
committee, predicted a deci
sive victory" for his version.
Claims Sentiment
Cretalla claimed a "lot of
sentiment" for his plan, intro
duced Monday. He forecast
"sympathetic treatment" for
at least one part, curbing.ma-
jor league baseball broadcasts
and telecasts in minor league

The sports anti-trust mea
sures all are designed to clear
up confusion over professional
sports' status under anti-trust
laws. All stem from a Su

year denying pro football the
immunity from anti-trust laws
enjoyed for years by organ
cd baseball.

"Two base hits were all we
needed," said the Dodger man
ager, bemoaning the lack of
hitting when it counts, and
then touched on the luck as

"Our double-play balls were
hit right to them, while theirs
just barely went through for

And as for pitching. Alston

baseball, football, basketball

sports activities "reasonable

include reserve clauses, draft
systems, farm systems and
regulation of broadcasting
rights.
The Keating bill deletes the
words "reasonable and neces

to such practices.
Cretella's plan likewise
exempts sports practices but
cracks down on major league

Senate Debates
Alaska Statehood
Washington (UPI) The
Senate was called into ses
sion an hour earlier than
usual today to debate Alaskan
statehood.
Supporters of the House
passed statehood bill were
hopeful it would be passed
without change by the end of
the week and sent to Presi
dent Eisenhower for signa
ture. The probability of night
sessions was' foreseen.
The President has urged
congressional approval of
Alaska as the 49th state and
was expected to renew his
plea at a weekly meeting
with congressional Republican
leaders today.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson
(D-Wash.) said in a prepared
speech that t statehood for
Alaska could be thwarted if
the Senate makes any changes
in the House bill. In case of
amendment the bill would be
returned to the House where
it could be bottled up in
committee.

Search Asked for
Yacht Thespian
' Tokyo (UPI) The U.S.
Air Force was asked today to
search for the Hollywood
yacht Thespian, overdue on
a trip from Formosa with 10
Americans aboard and feared
captured by the Chinese Communists.-
Direct inquiries also were
sent to the Chinese Commu
nist government to see if the
112-foot motor yacht could
have become disabled and
drifted into Communist wa
ters. However Japanese Coast
Guard authorities predicted
the yacht would arrive here
Friday.
The Thespian, captained by
actor-producer John Calvert,
was four days overdue on the
voyage from Formosa to Ha
kata, southern Japan. It was
spotted near the Chinese Com
munist coast late last week.
Calvert, who starred in the
filmed "Falcon" series and is
now a stage magician, was
en route to Japan for a series
of theater performances. His
wife, red-haired actress Ann
Cornell, flew here last Thurs
day with their three-week-old
son who was born in a Taipeh
hospital.

Boxer Gives
Challenge
New York (UPI) Blond
Wilfie Greaves, who outpoint
ed Otis Woodard for his sixth
straight victory, challenged
loudly today for a shot at the
British Empire middleweight
crown.
Greaves, who already holds
the Canadian title, won a
unanimous decision over
Woodard of New York in their
TV 10-rounder at St. Nicholas
arena Monday night. He
weighed 159 pounds to Wood
ard's 161.
Greaves, who has a press
ing style reminiscent of that
used by former world cham
pion Bobb Olson, forced the
action in every round. His
superiority at close quarters
caused much holding by
Woodard, a protege of cham
pion Sugar Ray Robinson.
Wilfie, 22 and favored at
2-1, scored his 20th victory in
30 starts on a rounds basis:
5-3-2, 6-4, 8-2.
Dempsey 63
Today
Los Angeles (UPI) Jack
Dempsey celebrated his 63rd
birthday today with a beam
ing smile for his four grand
daughters and a few tips on
how boxing can solve its
problems.
Looking fit and trim as he
quietly observed the anniver
sary in his apartment in near
by Santa Monica, the former
heavy weight champion ex
plained that the fight game
first assume the responsibility
of self-control.
"Boxing will just have to
clean up its own affairs the
way baseball did," he said.
"It might be better off with
some sort of national czar or
commissioner, but since that's
unlikely, it must take care of
its own police work."
Dempsey, born William
Harrison Dempsey at Manas
sa, Colo., June 24,1895, insists
that the present-day scarcity
of top-flight fighters is due to
the disappearance of the small
neighborhood boxing clubs.
