Color Important Factor
In Evaluation of Stamp
Ability to judge shades of
color is often the decisive fac
tor in determining the value
of a stamp, especially the old
er ones.
A case in point is that of a
friend who bought a series of
French stamps including a 40
centime item that was issued
in the early 1870s.
The design is a common
one. Across the top are the
words REPUB FRANC. The
word POSTES is across the
the bottom, preceded and fol
lowed by the denomination.
In the center, framed . by a
circle, is a female head sym
bolizing "La Belle France."
In buying it, he, as well
as the seller, assumed that
its color was an orange yel
GRANT HALF DOLLARS WITH STAR WORTH $73
If you happen to have a
1922 Grant Memorial com
memorative half dollar, take
a good look at it because it
may be worth much more
than the $5 at which it is
usually valued.
The half dollar commemor
ates the 100th anniversary of
the birth of President Ulysses
S. Grant.
The face of the coin shows
a bust of General Grant in
uniform with the dates 1822
1922 below it and the words
"United States of America"
above.
On the reverse is shown a
log cabin with a rail fence in
front and overgrown by trees,
in remembrance of his birth
place at Point Pleasant, Ohio.
The distinguishing mark to
look for is a small star which
may be found on the face of
the coin in the "field" or
background upon which the
portrait bust sits.
LONG RIFLE BARREL ACCURATE AFTER YEARS OF USE
The longest rifle I have
ever heard of is a flintlock
said to measure six feet nine
inches from butt plate to the
end of the barrel.
The longest I have ever
seen is one that measured six
feet two inches overall. It, too,
was a flintlock, and since
the lockplate was inscribed
with words "Klaseius fecit,"
it was probably made by one
Abner Klase, of Ringtown, Pa.
The weapon fired a .42 cal
ibre ball and, considering its
rifling that had become rather
worn, it was still surprisingly
accurate. At 50 yards 10 shots
fired from a rest made a group
that measurer only eight inch
es in its maximum diameter.
That it was accurate enough
for that, despite its worn rifl
ing, is probably due to the
length of the barrel. The mak
ers of the famous Kentucky
and Pennsylvania rifles knew
that the longer the barrel the
greater the accuracy would
be. And they undoubtedly
also realized that-as the rifl
ing wore down and the weap
on became more like a
smoothbore, it would still
have a greater degree of ac

lowish, a qualification that
made it worth just about the
$5 that he paid for it.
However, as he was putting
It in his album, his wife com
mented on the stamp's color,
speaking of it as an unusual
shade of scarlet yellowish.
The variation of the 40
centime stamp with a scarlet
as against an orange shade
had a catalogue value of $50
in used condition, such as
his was.
Had the stamp been un
cancelled, its value would
have been $300.
Differences in value due to
differences in shades of color
are to be found in stamps of
practically every country.
According to figures sup
plied by the mint, 67,215 coins
were issued without the star
and 4,256 were minted with
it.
Without it, the coin is val
ued as high as $7 by some
catalogues provided that it be
in uncirculated condition. If
the coin has the star, the
catalogue value ranges to as
high as $75.
An acquaintance tells me he
came across one of the starred
commemoratives some years
ago. The coin had been circu
lated extensively, though not
enough to render any of its
lettering or design illegible.
The dealers he showed it
to made him a top offer of
$10, explaining that they
wouldn't be able to get more
than $20 or $25 for it in view
of its condition.
He finally sold it to a col
lector for $20.
curacy because of its length.
But though most of these
early rifles have long bar
rels, not all of them do. Some
were turned out with short
barrels not over three feet
long.. -
One that I saw with a 32
Inch barrel almost certainly
could not have been designed
for a child's use. It was of '54
calibre, indicating that it was
to be used for the biggest kind
of game. '
Very probably the man for
whom it was made intended
to use it in densely wooded
country and wanted a weapon
that could be handled as easily
as one of our hard-hitting
modern carbines.
There was nothing on that
short flintlock rifle, by the
way, to indicate the maker or
place of manufacture. It had
the Masonic .symbol of the
square and compass, done in
brass and set in the stock, but
that is common to many of
the flintlocks turned out in
the latter 1700s.
The piece sold for $375, a
fair price in the current mar
ket for such antique weapons.
