Protestant worship
By LOUIS CASSELS
United Press International
In number, Presbyterians
rank fifth among U. S. rellg
ious bodies. In prestige, they
rank near the top.
Presbyterians have played
an influential role in U. S
history since their first
church was founded by the
Scotch immigrants at Reho
both, Md., in 1683. Their
handiwork is strikingly evi
dent in the U. S. constitution
which set up a system of gov
ernment patterned after i
Presbyterian synod.
Today there are about 4,'
200,000 ' Presbyterians in the
United States, more than any
other country of the world.
Among them are President
Eisenhower, Secretary of
State John Foster Dulles, FBI
Director J. Edgar Hoover
and scores of other prominent
persons. x .
. Nearly three-fourths of Am
erica's Presbyterians belong
to one denomination, the
United Presbyterian church in
the USA, which was formed
at Pittsburgh last week by
a merger of two groups. The
Southern Presbyterian church
with 830,000 members, is the
second largest body. They are
eight other Presbyterian de
nominations, ranging in size
from less than 500 to more
than 85,000 members
Governed by Elders
. Presbyterians get their
name from a system of church
government which is their
distinctive contribution to
Protestant Christianity.
There are three basic types
of church organization. The
churches governed by bishops
are said to have an "Episco-

meeting. The names of the

under Jackson county.
Faye George gave an inter
esting report on" an article
entitled "A New Window in
the Sky." Carl Jansky, who
worked for the Bell Tele
phone company, discovered
that there was a noise inter
rupting their service across
the ocean each night. The
noise was lour minutes ear

stars. Jansky died before he
had completed his work but
others carried on. At present
there are radio towers all
over the world collecting data
from his discovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Leland M.
Charley attended State
Grange at Eugene and gave a
report from the meetings they
attended. There were -33
Grangers from Jackson coun

The poem stressed the need

Those in which local congre
gations rule their own affairs
by majority vote are "Con
gregational." The Presbyterian system is
a representative form of gov
ernment in which authority
is vested in "elders" elected
by the people. Presbyterians
believe it is the same system
used by x the early Christian
church. They cite numerous
New Testament passages re
ferring to "Presbyters" the
Greek word for "elders" con
ducting church affairs.
The governing body of a
local Presbyterian church is
called "The Session." It con
sists of the minister "teach
ing elder" and several elect
ed laymen "ruling elders." A
"Presbytery" ' exercises auth
ority over all churches in a
particular city or other geo
graphical area. It is composed
of approximately equal num
bers of ministers and ruling
elders chosen to represent
their sessions.
A "Synod" is a similar rep
resentative assembly govern
ing a number of Presbyteries.
All of the Synods in the coun
try come under the General
Assembly, which meets an
nually. Followers of Calvin "
In doctrine, Presbyterians
are spiritual descendants of
John Calvin, the Swiss theo
logian and 16th century con
temporary of Martin Luther
who left as great an imprint
as Luther on the Protestant
reformation..
John Knox carried Calvin's
teachings to Scotland in 1550
and on them built the Church
of Scotland, still the parent
church of Presbyterians
through the world.
It was from Calvin that
