great musicians drawn to the
West Coast by the motion pic
ture and television industry.
Their musical scores con
tribute & great deal to the
full enjoyment of 8 movie or
TV production, and th moods
they set through music have
the power of lifting good pic
tures into the category of
great productions.
Two such movies which
come to mind are "High
Noon" and "The High and the
Mighty." Eoth were top
stories, convincingly told and
well acted. But Dimitri Tiom-
kin's music he won an
Oscar for best dramatic scor
ing for "Th High and the
Mighty" made them even

Music Will Outlast Film
Pursuing this theme fur
ther, I think we can safely
predict that Victor Young's
"Around the World," written
for the Mike Todd film, will
be played long after the movie
exhausts its run.
I am proud of my associa
tion with Nelson Riddle, one
of Hollywood's leading musi
cians. A triple-threat man in
his field, Riddle scored my
Paramount film, "St. Louis
Blues," which is based upon
the life story and music of
the late Will C. Handy. He
also conducts and arranges
both my nightclub acts and
Capitol recording sessions.
Every motion picture stu
dio has made its contribution
to good music. Although no
longer at MGM, Johnny
Green cannot be divorced
from the fine music that came
out of the Culver City lot
during his tenure there, in
cluding his Academy Award
winning "Easter Parade" and
"American in Paris" scores.
Newman Respected
No musician is held in high
er esteem by his peers than
Alfred Newman at 20th Century-Fox,
with over 30 Acad
emy Award nominations and
five Oscars for "Alexand
er's ' Ragtime Band," "Song
of Bernadette," "Mother Wore
Tights," "With a Song in my
Heart" and "Call me Madam."
Also eminent in their field
are Warner Brothers' Max
Steiner (with more than 25
nominations and three Oscars
to his credit) and Ray Hein
dorf, Columbia's Morris Stol
off, and others like Elmer
May Savings Bond
Sales Show Increase
May sales of U. S. Savings
Bonds in Jackson county
showed a slight increase over
the same month a year ago,
but total sales from January
through May of this year
were down 550,000 from the
same period in 1957, accord
ing to the treasury depart
ment. Sales for May totaled $75,
501 compared to "May, 1957,
sales of 867,788. In the five
month period through May
this year county sales have
reached $361,219 compared
to 8411,545 for the same per
iod a year ago.

Educational TV
Extension Seen
Portland (UPD The
president of the University of
Oregon has suggested that
educational television might
be used to extend junior col
lege level courses throughout
Oregon.
Dr. O. Meredith Wilson
said that this might help in
solving the problem of get
ting such courses to areas
where communities are no
large enough to support com
munity colleges.
Chancellor John R. Rich
ards of the state system of
higher education said he be
lieved that the present chan
nel 7 and Portland's channel
10, when activated, could
reach 80 per cent of the popu
lation of Oregon.
Dr. Richards said the 1959
Legislature would be asked
to continue financial support
of educational TV. A sum of
548,000 was provided in 1957.
He said $75,000 will be need
ed for the coming bienrilum.
He said it was 'hoped more
money would be forthcoming
from foundation funds.
Marine Engineers Continue To Strike

were reported far apart today
in their efforts to end a three-
day strike of marine eneineprs
that has tied up about 100
snips in East and Gulf Coast
ports. ,
