Five Per Cent
Rate Hike Slated
Salem (UPI) Oregon
shippers will pay five per
cent more in railroad freight
rates starting July 1 on many
commodities moving within
the state instead of the 12
per cent hike scheduled.
Public Utility Commission

the new rates were authoriz
ed on the application of W.
R. Watson, tariff publishing
officer of the North Coast
Freight Rate bureau.
The 12 per cent hikes were
granted to railroads last
March. "The motor carriers
did not follow the lead of the
rail carriers in. the rate in
crease cases last spring," Mor
gan said. "The motor carriers
asked for a five per cent in
crease instead of the 12 per
cent requested by the rail
carriers. Now we see compe
tition forcing the rail carriers
to scale their rates down to
the truck level."
Commodities including su
gar beets, limestone, logs find
wood chips were excluded
from the 12 per cent increases
which are still being studied
by the PUC. . .. .

diction was made today that
current high prices for red
meat will continue except for
a short period, in the late sum
mer and early fall.

cisco, president and general
manager of the Western
States Meat Packers associa
tion, said that meat demand
was holding up despite a
larger cattle movement to
western and midwestern feed
markets of late.
He said pork supplies
should be more plentiful this
fall and that prices should be
lower.

private in the Army.

Pass.
Mr. McFall was born Dec.
6, 1890, in Minnesota. He was
married . Aug. . 20, 1913, in
Spokane, Wash., to Alice
Leighton, who died in 1944.
He had just recently come to
southern Oregon from Sacra
mento, Calif.
Survivors include three
sons, George Rapp, Rogue
River; William McFall, Port
land, and Lincoln McFall,
Rogue River; and a daughter,
Mrs. Doris Donaghe, Marietta,
Okla.

effort to improve the form of
the 1959-61 state budget.
Director John Richardson
said that Ken Bragg, with the
chief administrative office of
Los Angeles county, would be
loaned to the state for seevral
months to improve the budge
tary presentation of state
agencies.
Richardsan said the empha
sis would be on explaining
what services and objectives
agencies had in mind when

For Arrested Men
Two men were arretted
early this morning by state
police and sheriff's deputies
in connection with a burglary
at the Echo Tavern in Shady
Cove late Wednesday evening,

State police reported' that
the owner of Shady ; Cove
Lockers next to the Echo Tav
ern, reported prowlers in the
building sometime after clos
ing time. Police said - entry
was gained by breaking and
entering through a .window in
the ladies rest room in the
rear of the tavern.
The burglars looted the pin
ball machine, ' took change
from the. cash register, and
took beer and cigarettes, po
lice said. The total amount of
the loss has not "been deter
mined.
