Schedules Meeting
Ashland The Ashland
Human Rights Council will
hold a public meeting at 8:30
at the YMCA. A report on
the recent Oregon forum on
inter-group relations will be
given by the Rev. Fred Ploch

Youth Suggested
For West Point
Airman Duane Sides, son of
Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Sides, 926
Murray st., Medford, has been
recommended for West Point
by his "commanding officer, ac
cording to his father.
Sides wrote his father that
recently he appeared before
a board of ranking officers at
Godwin Air Force base, Ft.
Knox, Ky., and was told he
would be recommended for an
appointment to West Point.
Sides is now a corporal and
second in command of the con
trol tower at the airfields
. Sides entered the Air Force
in September,, 1957. He took
basic training at Ft. Ord,
Calif., then went to the Air
Force school on air traffic
control at Keesler Air Force
base, Mississippi. He gradu
ated second in his class in
April. From there he was
sent to - Goodwin Air Force
base.
Sides is expected home ear
ly in July on a 21-day leave.

man graduated from Medford
High school and spent two
years at Southern Oregon col
lege, Ashland. He was a pitch
er on the college varsity base
ball team and played for the
Cheney Studs in the Rogue
Valley league.

Bob Melton, 86, known as the
"barbecue king," died here
Wednesday. He launched his
career in 1924 with a small
barbecue pit and roadside
stand near here. The firm now
ships barbecued pork all over
the U.S. and to many, foreign
lands.

For Kidnaping

Toronto (UPI) Three
Montreal detectives . were
scheduled to fly here today to
serve a warrant on Mrs. Mar
greta Goede, 46, charging her
with the kidnaping of Joel
Reitman, 2I-year-old heir to
a clothing chain store fortune.
The blonde, neatly dressed
suspect emigrated to Canada
from Germany in 1954.
Detectives said Mrs. Goede,
who worked as a waitress,
maid and housekeeper in var
ious parts of Western Canada,
arrived in Montreal June 2
and was given two names the
following day from the Unem
ployment Insurance Commis
sion as possible employers.
Hired For Job
One of the names was Cyril
Reitman and police' said she
was hired there immediately
when she applied for a job.
Mrs. Reitman, whose father-in-law
heads a chain of ladies
wear clothing stores, de
scribed Mrs. Goede as a tre
mendous maid and as fond, of
her son, Joel, as he was" of
her.
However, . last Saturday
while the Reitmans were at
tending a dance, Joel and the
maid disappeared.
' He was found in Ottawa
where taxi driver Edward
Royer said a woman passen
ger had asked him to find a
baby sitter for the boy while
she shopped.
Mrs. Goede maintained
Wednesday she had been im
personated in Montreal and
denied she was the woman
employed by the Reitmans.

company. Sam Jones and Dave
Cotton will show a film en
titled "The Road Ahead,"
showing pictures taken along
the interstate highway sys
tem traveling throughout the
United States.
The film is in color, and one
item that will be of special
interest to men will .be the
showing of some of the huge
new equipment. According to
Chuck Moorehouse, one of the
men at the shop, a large carry
all has been recently sold by
the company to a timber oper
ator in the valley which has
the capacity of 32 yards and
takes the place of several
pieces of ordinary equipment.
The ..program will start at
8 o'clock and anyone inter
ested is welcome. For the dis'
play table the chairman re
quests members to bring old
periodicals, books and any ar
ticle of interest to members.
Liberty Freighter
Taken in Custody
Portland (UPI) The U.S.
Marshal here Wednesday took
the Liberty freighter Harold
D. Whitehead into custody at
a Portland terminal after
members of the crew filed a
libel action, in Federal court
for 968,000 in back wages.
Capt. Philip Curran, master
of the Whitehead, had told the
crew there was no money for
wages. An attorney for the
crew asked the court to con
demn and sell the ship to sat
isfy the wage claims of the 36
crewmen.
The Whitehead sailed from
Galveston, Texas, last Decem
ber, moving between foreign
ports until it arrived in Port
land last week in ballast.

Whitehead Steamship Com
pany of New York.
A new 64 ton, 600 horse
power dump truck is said to
be the largest ever built.
