Breeding Animals for
Temperament
I recently read that after
many years of breeding white
rats for laboratory use, a
strain has now been obtained,
the members of which can be
handled safe
ly. Certainly,
no one in his
senses would
ever try to
pick up a wild
Norway rat. A
few years ago
I read that a
s c i e n tist, by
& in-breeding the
Dr. Aivares occasional rats
which were so timid and ner
vous that when exposed in an
open tub, they urinated and
moved their bowels, obtained
a breed of animals almost all
of which had this "mucous
colitis" type of temperament.
More recently I read a paper
in which a man reported
breeding some 50 pups from
a very shy Bassett bitch. As
he expected, about half of the
pups were abnormally shy.
C. S. Hall and S. J. Klein
(1942) were able by selective
breeding to establish several
strains of rats differing in ag
gressiveness. J. P. Scott (1942)
bred into house-mice a num
ber of differences in social be
havior. R. C. Tryon (1940)
was able to bred more intel
ligence into rats, as shown by
their greater ability to learn
their way through a maze,
and W. T. Heron (1941) ob
tained similar results while
breeding animals that had an
increased tendency to activity.
These studies interest me be
cause they show how much
heredity has to do with deter
mining , the temperment and
intelligence of small animals.
In these experiments the en
vironment is kept constant.
A Mental Depression
One of the best descriptions
ever given of a depression was
that of Charles Lamb. He
wrote to a friend, "Dear B. B.
Do you know what it is to suc
cumb under an insurmoun
table day-mare 'a whoreson
lethargy Falstaff calls it
an indisposition to do any
thing, or be anything; a total
deadness and distaste, a sus
pension of vitality; an indif
ference to localities; a numb,
soporifical, good-for-nothing-
ness, an ossification all over;
an oyster- like insensibility to.
the passing events; a mind
stupor, a brawny defiance to
the needles of a thrusting-in-
conscience? I have not voli
tion enough left to dot my
eyes, much les to comb my
eyebrows; my eyes are set in
my head; my brains are gone
out to see a poor , relation in
Moorfields, and they did not
say when they'd come back
again."
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand' that - it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or. to attempt to diag
nose by mail.
