that certain
words mean
death to all of
us (although
we don't know
it) and those

The theory comes out of
paychoanalysis. Psychiatrists
who use that technique dis
covered certain words pro
duced in neurotic patients
what is known in the trade
as "the anxiety reaction."
The patienta didn"t know why
of how, and that's where the
orizing begins.
The words, it was theoriz
ed, were symbols to the un-

fear of death unconsciously

Dr. W. W. Meissner, psy
chologist of St. Louis univer
sity, St. Louis, Mo., tested this
theory in 40 non-neurotic
men between 23 and 45. You
may ask how he could do that
if the mental process is un
conscious, and it is a good
question. He made use of the
probability that a jolt of anx
iety iri the unconscious mind
will increase the electrical
charge which is always run
ning through the skin.
He took them one by one
into a sound - proof room
where temperature and hu
midity were maintained at
ideal levels, laid them com
fortably on a bed, attached
electrodes to their hands, and
pronounced the words in the
most "neutral" tone of voice
he could use.
The words he obtained
from psychoanalytic litera
ture. All were theoretically
proved 'to be symbolic of
death. He got 20 sets of them
altogether and mixed them
up with 30 words selected be
cause they couid have no
emotional meaning of any
kind.
The theoretical 20 death
symbols were: 1. Bird; 2.
Journey; 3. Candle burning

Increased Response
Many of these words in
creased the electric skin re
sponse of many of the sub1
jects. Some did it for only a
few of them. No one person
was entirely unresponsive to
all of 20 of them. You can
understand that this sort of
measurement can't possibly
be all white or all black. Sci
entifically it can be meas
ured only statistically and
statistically Meissner obtain
ed quite "significant" results
indicating th,at the words did
arouse unconscious anxiety.
The question remained: did
the unconscious mind associ
ate the words with death: Af
ter the relaxed testing on the
comfortable bed, he gave his
subjects lists of words and
asked them to write in what
they associated the words
with. A significant (statisti
cally) number wrote "death"
after the death symbol words
a significant (statistically)
number of times.
Meissner reported the re
sults to the American Psycho
logical association.

Graham Receipts
May Hit Million
San Francisco UPI Total
receipts from Billy Graham's
seven-week crusade in San
Francisco may exceed $1 mil
lion. Crusade leaders said Mon
day the receipts will be
enough meet local bilsl and to
pay for nationwide television
time.
They estimated local re
ceipts at $400,000 and contrib
utions from national TV audi
ences at more than $600,000.
Meanwhile, local crusade
leaders prepared an intensive
followup campaign. Beginning
next Monday, church workers
will visit homes throughout
the city and crusade leaders
will maintain offices to help
churches reach the 25,575 per
sons who made "decisions for
Christ" during the campaign.
Graham began a brief vaca
tion today in Yosemite Na
tional Park. He speaks at an
outdoor rally in Seals stadium
next Sunday and at a banquet
of the American Medical As
sociation next Monday.

Marines, Army Discussed
At Roundtable Meeting
Men who have dropped out
of high school consistently
score higher than high school
graduates do on the pre-enlist-ment
examination given by
the armed services, according
to Sgt. Harold D. Morts of the
local Marine Corps recruiting
station.
Sgt. Morts gave this as a
defense for the, services not
requiring' enlistees to be high
school graduates. However,
he added they do everything
within their power to encour
age applicants to complete at
least a high school education
before enlisting. .
The Marine recruiter and
MSgt. Warren M. Long of
the Army recruiting station
here were guest speakers at
the Monday noon Jackson
County Chamber of Com
merce roundtable in the Jack
son hotel.
Becomes More Mobile
"The service is becoming
more mobile and more tech
nical," Sgt. Morts empha
sized. To cope with this, he
said, the Marine Corps insti
tuted a "scientific education
program" eight months ago.
This program is open to
persons already in the service
who have specific interests in
a technical field such as elec
tronics. The successful appli
cant is discharged from active
duty and enrolled in the re
serves. "The service then pays
his full tuition at a college
or university for up to four
years of higher education.
The only obligation these
persons assume is that of
serving, as an officer, one
year on active duty for each
year of college they have
completed.
