Peacock Visits Lookout

Applegate Valley A most
unexpected visitor greeted
Ike Coffman one day while
he was at his post at Cinnabar
lookout here.

Not knowing of a'ny such
birds in the adjoining com
munity, Coffman was at a loss
to knovP where he was from.
He d&ided provisions with
his plumed visitor, giving him
such morsels as bread and po
tato salad, and at night he
roosted on the highest peak of
the lookout tower. Opon an
nouncing the arrival of this
unusual guest over a local ra
dio station, Coffman soon
learned that he belonged to
an Ashland man and had dis
appeared during the man's
two week absence.
Due to the rainy period,
Coffman and his wife have
been down from the lookout
for a week, remaining at their
home in Jacksonville, and at
last reports were anxious te
return to the lookout to see if
the bird had remained there.
He expected to take back a
supply of cracked corn.
Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Couch
have returned froi a 30-day
bus tour which took them as
far as Kansas and Oklahoma,
visiting six married children
and their families there and
in California. While on the
trip they celebrated their 51st
wedding anniversary, and
among their gifts were tickets
for the tour given by their
daughters, Mrs. Merle Catoij
and Mrs0Wilber Green of Ok
lahoma and Kansas. They also
visited brothers and sisters
and had good weather through
the entire trip.
Mrs.Margaret Fletcher of
Medford spent last week here
at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Bill Straube.

meeting will be a tour to the
home of Mrs. Milton Houston
on Little Applegate to view
her day lilies. The meeting
will open at 1:30 p.m. and in
terested persons are invited.

John W. Corson of Los
Angeles is making a ten-day
visit here at the home of his
brother, James Corson.
Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Nelson
and daughter, Linda, of San
Francisco were recent guests
of Mrs. Nelson's sister, Mrs.
Ed Fossen. They were accom
panied by Miss Aleta Snoek
of Holland, who is a student
in this country, and has lived
in the Nelson home during
the last year. She had com
pleted high school in Holland,
and took a post graduate
course in San Francisco. She
will tour part of the United
States this summer, and then
will leave for Holland.
Mr. and Mrs. Gail Buffing,
ton and daughter, Lona, made
a week end trip to Bend,
where they met Buffington's
mother, Mrs. Beulah Buffing
ton, of Boise, Idaho, who will
visit here for some time.
Mr. and Mrs. John Sutton
of Long Beach, Calif., who
are former residents of the

Frank Mitchell expected to
leave by train early this week
for New York where he was
called by the illness of his mo
ther. He expects to be gone

wagon, Mr. and Mrs. Louis
(Pappy) Jones, left recently
for a two month's trip to Val
lejo, Grand Canyon, and parts
of Idaho. They planned to be
accompanied from Vallejo by
their grandson.
Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Pursel
have had as recent guests Mrs.
Pursel's nephew and wife, Mr.
and Mrs. Marvin Ronfeldt of
Sioux City, Iowa, and the Ron
feldt's son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Ron
feldt of Kansas City, Kans.
The visitors also were the
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
West, and took a trip to the
coast and to the local cattle
range while here.

Many farmers here, unable
to complete curing of hay
due to storms, have been
obliged to stack wet bales in
order to clear the fields for
the growing second crop. The
damaged hay may be used for
fertilizer, while some are con
verting their crop to silage.
One needs not turn on the
television or go to a magazine
to find original remarks from
children. A ten-year-old local
girl, upon hearing that she
will be able to see Miss Amer
ica when she comes to the
Kiwanian Jackson county fair
in August, remarked excited
ly, "Is she alive?" Upon be
ing laughed at, she reworded
her question and said, "Is she
in person?
Mrs. Ed Steigert and son
of Susanville have spent sev
eral weeks here with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Williams. Mrs. Steigert will
make her home in Medford
for the summer, and residing
with her will be her sister,
Miss Mary Williams, who is

Bear Creek orchards. Steeert
is with the forest service at Ft.
Jones, Calif.
The rainy weather failed
to spoil a picnic at the Mike
Loftus home for the women
and families of the Little Ap
plegate Sewing club Sunday,
for they moved the picnic to
the nearby schoolhouse. About
30 people attended. The next
regular meeting will be June
26 at the home of Mrs. Earl
Sharp.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Van Bib
ber's of Thousand Oaks, Calif,
spent a few days here with
Mrs. Van Bibber's sister, Mrs.
Harry Davis, while enroute
to Canada to visit relatives.

shop recently and after Verl
served coffee, creamed and
sugared, confinded a special
recipe for luscious chicken
dumplings. In keeping with
these homey sentiments, Verl
made several trips to the Ap
plegate to remove a rail fence
to his own ranch on Merriman
road.

City Hall Plans Ordered

Eugene, has been accepted,
upon recommendation by the
dean of the university, to sub
mit plans for a new city hall.
The city council at the reg
ular meeting Monday night in
structed the recorder to sub
mit all data available to
Easton.
The council will compare
the cost of erecting a new'
building with the cost of pur
chasing an existing structure.
A report on a possible site for
a new building has not been
made by the committee. The
plans drawn by Easton will be
used for asking bids, if the
work is undertaken.
Mrs. Rathill Leonard flew
in from Los Angeles to spend
a few days with her son, Gor
don Leonard, and his family.
Daughters, Carolyn and
Marie Leonard are expected
to return this week-end from
a visit with their aunt, Miss
Margaret Morris, of Bend, to
share a part of their grand
mother's stay.
At the meeting of the coun
ty school board, the motion
was carried to purchase the
site of the O'Brien school for
not more than $3000, the
amount indicated by Superin
tendent Fleming that would
be acceptable to the heirs.
The city planning commis
sion with the assistance of
Jack Spitz, building inspector,
will draft a new building
code for the city of Cave
Junction. An important item
will be determining the set
back from Redwood highway
to conform with the state's
plans for widening the street
to 80 feet through the city.
Spears Wilson and Clyde
Knight have started work on
building sidewalks and a park
ing lot for the Josephine
County branch library.
Illinois Valley cub scouts
pack 20, held their awards
picnic Sunday afternoon at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Breckenridge. Rain almost
spoiled the affair for the 110
parents, brothers and sisters
and cubs attending, but the in
genuity of the committee and
fathers present in stretching
canvas covers made the pic
nic possible.
The Boy Scout Court of
Honor will be held in the
American Legion building
Thursday, June 19, at 8 p.m.

son of the Illinois Valley
Farm Bureau was held Thurs
day night in the vo-ag build
ing of the high school.
The business meeting, with
chairman Les Archer of Sa
lem presiding, covered discus
sions on important resolutions
dealing with the Bureau. Two
resolutions which were disap
proved by the group , dealt
with the proposed change in
the Farm, Bureau voting pol
icy and with that phase of the
Reciprocal Trade agreement
which is detrimental to the
Oregon farmers.
Special guests were Mr.
and Mrs. Malone, county
chairman and county secre
tary and John Perry, past
county chairman of Williams.
The chicken dinner given
by the Odd Fellows lodge of
Kerby for the Marguerite,
Chapter Rebekahs Wednesday
night at Kerby was attended
by about 75 persons.
