Glascock had a miniature
covered wagon, and log cabin
and other handmade articles
of wood. He remarked that in
case of a genuine depression
the covered wagon and log
cabin might be essential to
one going out to prospect for
gold. '
Following the program,
Grange meeting was called to
order by Melvin Lattie, acting
master in the absence of Mas
ter Charles Johnson, who with
Mrs.. Johnson is attending
State Grange.
Others attending State
Grange were Overseer Edith
Poe, treasurer Olin Poe and
Mr. and Mrs. Dee Hendrick
son. Mr. and Mrs. William Pol
ing from San Leandro, Calif.,
were visitors. They have lived
in San Leandro several years
but still retain their member
ship in Phoenix Grange, and
have relatives and many
friends around Phoenix.
Reporting on Agriculture,
Charles Hockersmith related
some interesting facts about
Cuba. He and Mrs. Hocker
smith visited their son who is
stationed there a short time
ago.
.He said there were few
tractors in Cuba. The main
crop is sugar cane, and in har
vesting the canes are piled
systematically on wagons and
hauled from the fields by
oxen. He also told of seeing a
house being built and how the
thatched roofs were made
from palm leaves. He had
seen banana and papaya in
bloom while there and that
now the fruit was ripening.
There are some large herds of
beef cattle.
In speaking of the people
there, he said there were
only two classes, the wealthy
and the very poor. The wages
are low and work mostly sea
sonal for these poorer people,
and their homes are very pri
mitive and sparsely furnished
with only the barest necessi
ties, and were quite a contrast
to the huge up-to-date United (
States Air Force base there,
where their son is located.
In speaking of the grain
crop in the U.S. he said it ap
peared now that the middle
west and northwest were
going to have one of the big
gest crops on record. Some
hay had been spoiled by the
rain and that the first crop of
alfalfa was selling for about
$12 per ton.
Vaughn Quackenbush, re
porting on horticulture, told
of a comparatively new plant
used for compost, the com
mon name for which is Qua
kers Comfy and also of the
disease called Pear Decline
Melvin Lattie, reporting on
legislature, talked of the re
cent tax base proposal which
wa killed by a vote of the
people at the last election,
and also on the milk quota
situation.
. Coral Schroeder. HEC chair
man announced the next HEC
meeting would be at the home
of Mrs. Loyal Bates, Wednes
day, June 18. There will be a
desert luncheon at'l p.m. Mrs.
Mona Ferns will be the co
hostess. Roll call will be an
swered by Vacation Safety
tops.
She also asked for volun
teers to take necessary dishes
from the Grange hall to the
Phoenix Community hall
where the ladies of Phoenix
Grange served lunches during
the Spring Festival Saturday.
Secretary Lesbia Lattie an
nounced the third and fourth
degrees would be exemplified
at Eagle Point Grange Tues
day, June 17, and that Willie
McLean, a member of Pomo
na Grange degree team, is ill
and in the Rogue Valley hos-
Dital.
And that Mrs. Lewin had
won first prize on her entry,
a kitchen apron, in the
Grange sewing contest.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Perl
were escorted to the Masters
station and presented their
Grange pins.
Mrs. Sol Cox, of the Sales
Slip committee, mentioned
this being the last month in
this quarter, it was nearing
the time when sales slips
should be turned in.
It was reported by the
Chaplain that Mrs. Geo. Hart
ley, our musician who has
been absent for some time be
cause of illness, is not feeling
so well.
Hefreshments of assorted
doughnuts and coffee were
served by the committee, Mrs.
Marian Niedermeyer and
daughter Evelyn, Mrs. Ber
nics Jenosky and Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas Klarin. Vases of
roses decorated the tables.
At the next meeting June
24 there will be a potluck sup
per preceding the meeting.
