The Medical
Recovery from Menial
Disease
In the Statistical Bulletin
of the Metropolitan Life In
surance Company it is stated
that "persons disabled by
mental disorders quite com
monly recover sufficiently to
be able to return to work
This was learned during a
study made by the Company's
statisticians. Some mental
troubles that are called or
ganic haven't such a favor
able outlook. They are the
ones that are due to such
causes as alcoholism, syphilis
and hardening of the arteries
of the brain. The so-called
functional disorders are main
ly schizophrenia and manic
depressive psychosis.
"for all mental disorders
the recurrence rate in the
first two .years following re
covery was 4.3 per cent per
annum. This rate fell to 2.6
per cent per annum in the
next three years, and to 1.6
per cent in the next five
years."
If studies had been made
after the tranquilizers had
come into use, the figures for
recovery would have been
better. t

destruction of cancer. The
neutrons penetrate better;
they cause less injury to the
skin and more injury to the
cancer cells. The problem
now is to devise a convergat-

and that can be used easily

Two People Who Endorsed
Foundations
I recently read that a Mrs.
V. E. Gonsalez, of Edinburgh,
left a fortune to a group of
anti - vivisection societies in
Great Britain and to their
National Anti-vaccination So
ciety. It interests me to see
that, like most anti-vivisect-ionists,
this woman hated all
of modern scientific medicine
and hence was against the
many forms of vaccination
that keep millions of us
healthy and save millions of
children from dying of diph
theria and other diseases. The
woman left 15,000 to a church
with the stiplation that every
year a sermon be preached
advocating the total abolition
of experimentation on ani
mals. She would not permit
even the wonderful work now
being done in laboratories to
save animals from illness and
death.
How sad it is to contem
plate that for the next 1000
years and more this money
must be used just to harass
the groups of fine men and
women who are constantly
trying to find cures for our
worst diseases. If our legis
lators had good sense, they
would not permit the giving
of money in perpetuity for
the injury of humanity and
for organized interference
with medical advances, and
the carrying out of much
needed public health ordin
ances. How much more humane
was Alfred H. Caspary, who
in memory of his wife, re
cently gave $3,000,000 to fi
nance a center in New York
for veterinary research, de
signed to improve the treat
ment of diseases of household
pets. The New York Women's
League for Animals isx plan
ning soon to erect a 10-story
building for the research lab
oratories. I can see much
sense to that. Mr. and Mrs.
Caspary apparently were real
lovers of. animals, and not
haters of medicine.
Drunken Driving
To show how dangerous it
is to drive a car while under
the influence of alcohol, all
one has to do is to read the
recent report of Commission
er Stephen P. Kennedy, of the
New York City Police. He
said that, according to alcohol
analysis tests, out of all the
motorists who were killed at
the wheel in New York City
last year, or who died within
24 hours after an accident,
55 per cent were drunk!
Holding Down the Height of
Tall Girls
Many a tall couple in this
country is worried about a
daughter who, at 14 or 15 is
too tall and still growing.
The parents write me, asking
if anything can be done to
stop the girl's growth. I am
sorry that I have no personal
experience with the problem.
All I can say is that recently
I saw in the J. A. M. A. an
article iby Dr. S. C. Freed, of
Mt. Zion Hospital, in San
Francisco, who says that in
two cases he apparently slow
ed the growth of overly tall
girls by giving them estrogen
(a form of ovarian extract).
Usually,1 such an extract does
no harm, so long as it is given
only during the second half
of the menstrual cycle.
I have heard that overly
short boys will sometimes
