Alexandria The Fayum
Oasis is a 770 square-mile gar
den spot fed by the Nile
through a 250-mile-long canal,
but I shall remember it espe
cially because of two birds
I saw there.
One is known as "the Little
Green Bee-eater" who eats
practically any bug that flies.
I first noticed him as a little
HJ-J3
blob of gold in a willow tree
near an irrigation ditch. It
was due to the sun's reflection
from his burnished green
head.
His total length is ten or
1 lcinches, thanks to diverging
tail feathers that make up
about two-thirds his length.
His plumage is a vivid green,
except for black markings on
his chest and near his rather
crimson eyes.
As I studied him, he took
off in a sweeping, almost swallow-like
flight of 40 or 50
feet. Vh3n he came back for
a landing, there was a brief
blur or orange. ?t was due
to a trick of sunlight shining
through the transparent green
of his wings.
The other bird was o- black
and white kingfisher, com
mon bird throughout the Nile
Valley.
This one was sitting .on the
top of a pole stuck in the
mud at the edge of a canal
we crossed. Unlike so many
of our kingfishers there is no
brilliance to his plumage. Just
black and white, he is perpetu
ally dressed for dining out, his
major occupation.
As I watched him, he tipped
his crested head slightly then
hurled himself at the water
to disappear in a splash of
spray. It was a miss. He al

most immediately took to the
air again, circled, then came
to a stop some 20 feet above
the surface. He kept his aerial
sfance much like a humming
bird. Except for his head be
ing bent slightly forward, he
was in an almost perpendicu
lar position, his wings beating
smartly in a dark haze.
Another Try
Then , he heeled over and
dropped for another try. It
was a success. When he re
appeared, he had a small fish
about four inches long, which
he gulped down as he resumed
his perch on the pole.
Many Egyptians dislike the
bird because they think he
kills off the fish. But though
they hunt their nests the
kingfishers burrow two or
three feet into the banks to
hollow out a chamber they
are rather half-hearted about
it. I saw them everywhere,
and in one place counted near
ly a dozen sitting on a tele
phone wire.

Parents Vole To
Permit Integration
Harlottesville, Va. (UPl
Parents of children in a
white school threatened with
admission of Negroes have
voted to permit a "measure of
integration" rather than to
close the public school, it was
disclosed Thursday.
The parents, from the Ven
able, School which 'has 13
Negro applicants for Septem
ber and is under court order
to accept them, voted 177-128
in favor of integration.
School boards of Charlot
tesville, Arlington and Nor
folk have been ordered to in
tegrate classes and are con
sidering more than 75 appli
cants of Negroes.
The vote was the . first
stand taken publicly by par
ents in the state in behalf of
any kind of school integra
tion. Several church groups
have opposed a state law that
makes it mandatory that pub
lic schools be closed if they
are integrated.

Three Die As Jet
Plane Hits House
Ponca City, Okla. (UPI)
A flaming jet plane, like a
"ball of fire," roared out of
stormy Oklahoma skies Wed
nesday night and crashed into
the farm home of Mr. and Mrs
Dick Harmon, killing Mrs
Harmon and the two jet pilots
Harmon escaped, but his
wife, Cora B., 68, was killed
instantly. Air Force officials
identified the T33 jet pilots as
1st Lt. Robert E. Irons, 25,
Westbury, N.Y., and 2nd Lt.
Christ Poulos, 22, Grand
Island, Neb.
Officials at Vance Air Force
Base, Enid, said the plane was
en route back to Vance from
Scott AFB, Belleville, 111.
