Set July 25-27
Klamath Falls The an
nual Klamath Basin Roundup
will be held July 25, 26 and
; 27, instead of the regular July
4, it was announced today
"The change was made to avoid
competition from rodeos in
other communities.
A full roster of world cham
pion cowboys, clowns and bull
fighters, and top cutting
horses will take part in the
show at the Klamath Falls
fairgrounds, officials stated.
The rodeo will be the first
leg of Oregon's Golden Tri
angle Rodeo association, with
the Eugene rodeo scheduled
for Aug. 1-3 and the Prine-
ville event Aug. 8-10.
The purse for the Klamath
rodeo will be $5,600. Com
bined purse for the triangle
perfbrmances will be $16,000.
Any amateur cowboy may
apply to the Rodeo Cowboy's
association for a $5 permit
which will allow him to' work
in any or all RCA rodeos dur
ing 1958, or until he wins a
total of $1,000 prize money.
He is then required to join
the RCA or quit competing
in the rodeos.

Lice Identified
In Portland Plague
Portland (UPI) The State
Board of Health announced
Wednesday the identification
of the lice that plagued school
children here for several
weeks
".. The Board said the infesta
tion was caused by both lice
and mites, separate pests.
Three lice specimens sup
plied by a local hospital were
identified at the U.S. Public
Health Service Plague Lab
oratory in San Francisco.
Their identity was discovered
by examining the nits.
The mites were identified
y the Federal Rocky .Moun
tain laboratory at Hamilton,
Mont.
A spokesman said few lice
probably were involved in the
infestation. The infestation
was caused mostly by mites
which are too small to see
with- the naked eye, he said.
Government Lists
286 Subversives
Don McNeil, manager of
the Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce, announced to
day that 286 organizations
have been designated to date
by the attorney general of the
United States as subversive.
According to procedures es
tablished by the attorney gen
eral, all organizations desig
nated were afforded the right
of appeal and a hearing. The
attorney general's list is used
chiefly in the government's
loyalty program.
Since many of the organiz
ations seek contributions
from business and the public,
it should be noted, McNeil
said, that the United States
treasury department has ruled
that contributions to organiz
ations on the attorney gener
al's -list are not deductible for
income tax purposes.
It was announced that the
Chamber would gladly assist
local firms, organizations and
citizens in checking the status
of any doubtful fund-raising
organization against the attor
ney general's list, upon request.
Monday Deadline
For Tax Estimates
Portland Monday, June
16, is the deadline for the
second payment of 1958 quar
terly estimated tax by indi
viduals, and for payment of
the second half of corporation
income taxes for calendar
year 1957, District Director
Ralph C. Granquist today re
minded taxpayers.
The regular due date, June
15, falling on Sunday is the
reason for the payment ex
tension to Monday, Granquist
explained.
Individuals who are liable
for the first time to file a dec
laration of estimated tax for
1958 (Form 1040 ES) on June
16 must pay one-third of the
estimated tax with their dec
laration. ;
Granquist said June 16 also
is the income tax return dead
line for U.S. citizens abroad
filing for calendar year 1957;
domestic corporations whose
records are abroad or whose
principal income is from U.S.
possessions; nonresident alien
individuals (other than resi
dents of contiguous coun
tries); nonresident foreign
corporations, and all other
foreign "partnerships and cor
porations.

for $1,717.62 each to Crater
Lake Motors, Medf ord, for two
ne wthree-quarter ton pickups.

Safe Swimming To Be
Discussed at Meeting
The community safety com
mittee of the Jackson County
Medical Society and the Med
f ord Safety Council will dis
cuss safe swimming principles
at a meeting of the Safety
Council at noon Friday in the
Medford hotel.
; An informal panel discus
sion will include Dr. Thomas
Rutter, Manville Heisel and
state police officers. Special
emphasis will be made on
methods of artificial respira
tion. The -groups have en
couraged the public to use
safe swimming principles.
