Naval Reserve Electronics
division 13-5, which includes
men from the Rogue valley,
will hold an open house Sat
urday, June 14, Flag Day, in
observance of the eighth anni
versary of the unit here. -
Highlights of the open
house will include motion pic
tures between noon and 8
p.m., guided tours through the
unit's station in the Federal
building, North Riverside ave.

booths. The open house is be
ing held to acquaint the pub
lic with the unit's operations
here.
The unit was activated in
June 1950, after two years
in a volunteer status, Lt. Ed
ward Leonard, Medford, was
commanding officer at the
time of activation. Prior to
that, Lt. Henry Fisher, Med
ford, served as commanding
officer.
Prinsy Functions
The division's primary
function is to train electronic
technicians, such as radiomen,
sonarmen and radarmen.
Since the Korean conflict,
however, its main duty has
been to orient young men on!
Navy life before entering ac-j
tive duty so that time spent j
on active duty can be used'
more advantageously. j
The division here has been i
one of the top electronics un
its in the 13th Naval district,
placing first . in 1951 and
among the top five in other
years. In 1956, it ranked
third in the nation with sim
ilar groups in the electronics
field.
Following Lt. Leonard's
service as commanding offic
er, others who commanded
the unit include Lt. Horace
Leland, Ashland; Cdr. Rod
ney Keating-, Ashland; Lcdr.
Richard P. Knights, Medford;
and Lt. Richard Schuchard,
Medford, the present com
manding officer. The Navy
has a policy of rotating com
mand of the unit. ,
Training Duty
A seaman recruit, entering
the unit in a reserve status,
may request two-weeks train
ing duty at San Diego, Calif.
He then becomes eligible for
training duty aboard the shop
the following year. Several
local reservists have received
advancements to storekeep
er, hospitalmen, boatswain
mates, and other ratings, in
cluding electronic tech
nicians. Recently, a Wave petty of
ficer, Virginia Ghnings, den
tal technician first class, join
ed the local reserve unit.
The unit is now open for
a limited number of men. Eli
v gible are high school seniors
between 17 and 18V&, Navy
veterans with ratines of ra
diomen, radarmen, sonarmen,
electronic technicians and
quartermaster, and Navy
men who have been released
from active service during
the past three years.

Men accepted in the div

liment is 41 enlisted men and

Truck Taken Off Cambridge Roof

A Civil Defense rescue team
succeeded late Wednesday in
removing a truck from the
150-foot high roof of a Cam
bridge University building.
But they had to cut it up with
an acetylene torch first.
The ancient truck called
"Maybell" was hoisted to the
roof in one piece Sunday by
student pranksters using
ropes, pulleys and lots of mus
cle power. The pranksters
