The Hollywood Scene
By HAZEL JOHNSON
United Press Writer
Hollywood (UPI) An
other county was heard from
today in the rocket race to
the moon Hollywood
or more, specifically, Colum
bia Pictures.
As producer Charles Sch
neer explains it, he hopes to
get the life story of the West's
foremost outer space expert,
Wernher Von Braun, on the
screen before anybody gets
a rocket up there.
Schneer, who will co-produce
the Von Braun story
with a German producer,
Friedrich Mainz, did not elect
to clarify just why it is nec
essary that this movie be in
orbit before the moon is hit
with a rocket.
But he did hint that film's
finish may give a date or a
time the U. S. will .let fly a
moon missle.
Race Against Time
"We expect to be out next
year in 1959. And I guess
you could say we're in a race
to see if Columbia or a rocket
is going to get there first,"
Schneer acknowledged.
The "race" officially began
this week when it was an
nounced Schneer's own com
pany, Morningside Interna
tional Productions, and Mainz'
outfit, Rhombus Films of Mu
nich, were co-partners in the
venture.
Schneer said a bi-lingual
writer, George Froeschel, had
been assigned to write the
screenplay which will show
the rocket e'xpert who first
achieved fame while in the
German army during World
War II was one of 120 rocket
men who invited capture by
the U. S. Army and subse
quently was contracted to
build rockets for this country.

Italy Politics
Face Rocky Road
Rome (UPI) Italy Tues
day seemed to be heading
down the political road which
led France to parliamentary
collapse government by a
cabinet lacking majority sup
port. The nation's largest party is
the Christian Democrat but it
failed to win a majority in
last month's national elections
and has been unable to draw
any of the smaller parties into
a workable coalition.
The party's national council
met Tuesday and accepted the
task of forming a minority
government to run the coun
try through the summer
months. It could count on the
parliamentarians' desire to
leave sweltering Rome for the
mountains and beaches to
postpone major political deci
sons until autumn.
Hopes that a middle-of-the-road
government could be
formed were dashed Monday
night when the tiny Republi
can party and the anti-Communist
Socialist led by Giu
seppe Saragat decided against
joining a coalition headed by
the Christian Democrats.
There was a slight chance tfiat
Saragat might change his
mind but the Republicans
voted to postpone their deci
sions until October. .

as the film's technical advisor.
International acting favor
ite, Curt Jergens, may play
the lead, the producer said,
with Maureen O'Hara cast as
the beautiful English-Irish spy
who played an important part
in the scientist's life.
Preliminary plans call for
the movie to be shot in black

Locations will include Wash
