The Hollywood Scene
Hollywood (UPI) Seven
years ago a freckled-faced kid
who parked the convertibles
of the stars at a movietown
nightclub traded the uniform
of the car lot for a tux and a
job inside singing.
That same kid now a man
of 31 today could regret he
ever took off the white shirt
with "Mocambo" lettered on
the back.
The season? When Champ
Butler was parking cars he
didnt' make much maybe
$60 a week but his bills
were paid.
Today he's going through
bankruptcy proceedings.
No Money, No Luxury
As Butler explained it to
the court's bankruptcy ref
eree, you cant continue to
live as high when the money
isn't coming in as you learned
to live when it poured in."

But Butler also says that
he feels his debts totaling
$18,000 are a moral obliga
tion and it is his intention to
pay creditors every penny.
Butler said he got into debt
"the usual way," poor finan
cial management and then a
bad year.
"I made the normal mis
takes. And I did a little gam
bling. But nothing serious.
Got Break in 1951
"In 1951 I got my break
Jfhd began to earn between
$50,000 and $100,000 a year,"
he continued. "But I was pay
ing out 40 per cent of my sal
ary in commissions.
"One thing led to another
and then I got in a hassle
with my business manager,
and in order to break my con
tract with him had to make a
big settlement.
"In 1955 I owed $34,000,
but I've steadily been able to
reduce that almost in half be
cause 1956 was a good year
for me. But 1957 was bad I
didn't work very much, and
every cent I was making was
going out immediately and
we had nothing to fall back
on."

Deeper Channel
Found Desirable
Portland (UPI) Army
Engineers found unanimous
agreement here Thursday that
the present Columbia river
shipping channel is inade
quate and that it should be
deepened to 40 feet and wid
ened to 750 feet.
The hearing conducted by
Col. Jackson Graham, Port
land district engineer, took
about 100 statements in favor
of channel improvemenfs, in
cluding statements from Gov.
Robert Holmes, members of
the congressional delegation,
chamber of commerce and
Mayor Terry Schrunk.
Capt. Ralph F. Caples,
president of the Columbia
River Pilots, told the hearing
that "we are 12 years late
asking for a new channel."
William R. Morrish of Co
lumbia Empire Industries said
his organization was "de
termined that the advent of
larger ships with lower unit
costs of cargo carrying should
not, for lack of an adequate
channel, reduce Portland to a
second class seaport." 1
