Then learn to dance. It's
the best way I know to stay
out of the limelight at any
party when the music starts
and the beat begins.
It's perfectly silly but
dancing on the screen is like
smallpox to a social career.
All eligible partners consider
the girl who has been billed
as a dancer a pro and as
such, completely out of their
class.
This is ridiculous. What
Mr. Average Man doesn't real
ize is that dancing for the
screen is very different from
dancing for pleasure at a night
club or a private social gath
ering. Why they think that
we, as dancers, do nothing
but exhibition numbers, is
something I never will under
stand. Of course, I'm not alone on
this tight little non-dancing
island. Every girl I know who
is known as a dancer on the
screen has the same problem.
And so do the men. '
Occasionally when Fred As-
taire and I attend the same
party, he will ask me to
dance. And what happens?
Suddenly we discover we are

dropped off to the sidelines to
watch. The awful part is that
we both know we are terrific
disappointments to our audi
ence because we just dance
and aren't half as sharp at
the sambas or tangoes as most

Problems for . Men
Actually, men dancers have
more of a problem than the
girls. Occasionally they are al
most forced to ask a girl to
dance and, unless they go in
for a few fancy spins, their
partners are shattered. But
let them try to slip in an ex
tra, glide or two and what
happens? Several days later
they are shocked to learn that
they are considered danced

Single Agency for Air Safely Urged .
Washington (UPI) W. A.
Patterson, president of United
Air Lines, said Thursday a
single federal aviation agency
is "an essential first step"
toward improving air safety.
But it will not be an "im

Testifying on a bill to rjro-
