day afternoon on a charge of
petty larceny involving the

market. He is being held in

THOMAS H. RIGGINS
Thomas H. Riggins, 72, a
resident of Medford for the
past 10 years, where he lived
with his brother and sister-,
in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
L. Riggins, 234 West Fifth st.,
died in the Veterans' hospital
at Seattle on Thursday.
Funeral services, with full
military honors and the Vet
erans of World War I, Med
ford Barracks 540 in charge,
will be conducted .at 11, a.m.
Saturday at the graveside in
Memory Gardens Memorial
park. Chapel Mortuary is in
charge of arrangements.
Mr. Riggins, the son of
Henry and Rose Harvill Rig
gins, was born Nov. 10, 1885.
At the age of 17 he enlisted
in the United States Army
which he made his career. He
was a veteran of World War
I, and a member of the VFW.
Besides his brother in Med
ford, he is survived by two
sons, Delbert Riggins, of Ft.
Lewis, Wash., and Robert Rig
gins, Boise, Idaho; two daugh
ters, Elaine and Rose, in
Idaho; and 11 grandchildren.

Ashland Laura C. Ward,
82 of 803 North Main st., Ash
land, died June 5. She had
been in failing health for the
past three weeks.
Born June 12, 1875, in Lake
view, Ore., she made her
home in Ft. Bidwell, Calif.,
moving to Ashland two years
ago.
She is survived by a daugh
ter, Mrs. Pope Jones, Ash
land; two sisters, Mrs. Dora
Henry, Ft. Bidwell, Calif.,
and Mrs. Ruby Draper, Etna,
Calif., and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be
held. Monday, June 9, at 2
p.m. at the Ft. Bidwell Com
munity church with Litwil
ler's Funeral home, Ashland,
in charge of arrangements.
Interment will be in the Ft.
Bidwell cemetery.

Ashland Howard Leslie
Miller, 57, of 1365 Quince
st., Ashland, died unexpect
edly June 5 in Kingsburg,
Calif. He was discovered dead
in the sleeping compartment
of his ' truck by his partner,
Albert Calhoun, while they
were en route south for a load
of vegetables.
He was born March 10,
1901, in Stanley, Wise, and
has been in failing health
since January. ' "
He is survived by his wid
ow, Jennie Miller, Ashland;
a son, Jack Miller a staff ser
geant stationed at Thule Air
base, Greenland; three daugh
ters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hamilton,
Great Falls, Mont., Neta and
Alice, both Ashland; three
grandchildren; his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Miller,
a brother, Lloyd Miller, Ash
land, and a sister, Mrs. Thel
ma Hollenbeck, Crescent City,
Calif.

industries and a fairly sharp

today recorded a major earth
quake at a distance of 2,900
miles southeast , of here, labo
ratory director Dr. Charles
Richter announced.
Dr. Richter said the auake
had a magnitude of 6.7 on the
Richter Scale, strong enough
to do major damage if its cen
ter was in a populated area.
The distance and direction
would place the quake some
where in Central .America, he
said.
