Senator Neuberger Sees Nothing Wrong

the outfit "went out over the
Associated Press network and
appears in this week s lime
magazine, which characterizes
her as "leggy."
In his weekly newsletter,
Neuberger gives Maurine
space to answer the critics.
Cllet "Improver"
Th critics said it was "im
proper," he said. One suggest
ed th)t this is the sort of
cheesecake photography that
is corrupting the morals of the
youth. But w have had
memy favorable letters, espec
ially from people connected
with the manufacture and sale
of clothes in Oregon," the
because Mrs.? newsletter said.
The Commerce Department,
it opointed out, reported that
12 million swimming suits
were sold during 1957.
"If it is permissible for all
these women to wear bathing
suits, then it is equally right
for the wife of a senator to do
so," said Maurine. "Just be
cause my husband is a mem
ber of the Senate, I refuse to
believe I am different from,
or better than, any other
American female.
Made in Oregon
"Furthermore, I was model
ing a suit made in Oregon by
Jantzen's. This was featured
by the commentator at the
show. Perhaps some of the
1,800 present were induced to
buy a Jantzen's suit, furnish
ing employment to Oregon
workers. I likewise modeled
White "Stag winter sports
clothes, also manufactured in
our state."
She added that Oregon sends
out tourist literature showing
bathing girls and she would
hate to think what was good
"to lure Oregon's visitors"
"wasn't regarded as "discreet
for the wife of one of Oregon's
senators."
"Furthermore," said the sen
ator's wife, "Evil is as evil
thinks."

Crusade
As Phenomenal
San Francisco (liPI)
Evangelist Billy Graham says
attendance at his San Fran
cisco crusade haseen "he-nomenal."
Addressing members oPjii
general committee at alunch
eon in San Mateo Wednesday,
Graham said the crusade 1iae
been "successful beyond our
anticipation."
"Before we began this cru
sade in April, I said we would
be fortunate indeed to get p,
000 people a night to drive
out to the Cow Palace.
Smallest Crowd 9,000
"I don't like to place a lot
of emphasis on attendance,
but ift San Francisco it has
been phenomenal. Our gmall
est crowd was last Tuesday
when we had 9,000 people. I
guess most any minister
wotild be thankful for a con
gregation of 9,000."
Graham also said more peo
ple have come forward to ded
icate their lives to Christ than
in any crusade he has con
ducted, with the single excep
tion of New York. The num
ber of conversions so far is
18.283 of a total attendance 8f
524,100.
Wednesday night, 9,500 per
sons heard Graham preach on
"How to Lead a Christian
Life." Graham said Christian
life in the United States is
this country's "greatest para
dox." Highest Membership
"We have the highest
church membership in our his
tory with more than 100 mil
lion Americans belonging to
churches or synagogues.
"We also have increasing
racial tension, one of our
greatest crime waves, rising
divorce rates and a growing
problem of juvenile delin
quency. "What's wrong? The church
itself. The average church
member is not living the
Christian life and his church
is not teaching him how to
do ' it. The greatest need in
America today is a revival
within the church."
Democrats here. There was a

people wrote in.

Alse Medels Winter Wear
She added that she also

"Our State Highway De

clean white sands in bathing

"I would hate to feel this

of Oregon's senators!" she

point is her own).
