ing surprised to find they
were back where they had
started at Shannon airport.
While the passengers were
asleep during te night, the
Superconstellation Trans-Canada
airliner developed trouble
in one of its four engines 1,-

Since the pilot had not yet
reached the halfway point of

Scientists Plan
Nuclear 'Mishap'
At Idaho Falls

power are planning a nuclear
"accident" near Idaho Falls,
Idaho, to see what happens
when a reactor oes haywire.
Plans for the test were re
vealed Tuesday at a meeting
of the American Nuclear So
ciety of George Freund, chem
ical engineer of the Argonne
National Laboratory, Lemont,

Tf scientist said a special
reactor is being built at the
Nati&ial Reactor Station in
Idaho for the "accident"
which will be caused by per
mitting uranium rods to over
heat. No Explosion
Freund said there would be
no explosion and little dam
age to the test facility al
though some radio-active gas
might escape from the rods.
The engineer said Argonne
Laboratory wants to find out
whether the liquid "fuel" will
collect in a puddle or other
wise disperse.
Overheating and a runaway
reactor are the two possible
kinds of accidents which an
atomic world must consider,
according to D?. B..P. Leon
ard of Convair Aircraft at
Fort Worth, Tex.
Leonard said a runaway re
actor is the most dangerous of
the two accidents. He said a
berserk atomic power source
might spread a cloud of radio
activity 20 or 40 miles down

Central Point Grange
The program Friday night
will be given at 8 o'clock pre
ceding the business session,
and will be slides by Mrs.
Frank Perl of some trips she
and her husband have taken,
including the annual Rose
Bowl parade. The program
will be open to the public
with Grangers' friends and
neighbors invited. Grand
mothers will decorate the dis
play table with pictures of
grandchildren or some of
their handiwork.
Serving committee will be
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mang,
and Mr. and Mrs. Keenan.
Considerable improvement
was accomplished by the
MEC at the last meeting when
the ladies met May 28 and
did some needed Spring house
cleaning.
Several Central Point
Grangers went to Klamath
Falls to aid in putting on the
fifth degree by the Pomona
Grange June 3.
Juvenile Grangers, whose
work will go to the State
Grange for judging, are Judy
Frink and Carolee Kuest en
tered an essay, and Carolee
a poster for the Pomona
Grange contest.
As men dig into the earth
they diicover that tempera
tures rise about one degree
for every 60 to 70 feet of the
depth of the excavation.

Table Rock Election day
passed rather quietly here
with nearly 50 per cent of
the community's eligible vot
ers making the trip to the
polls at Sams Valley to exer
cise their constitutional fran
chise. Many of the busy voters
mumbled and grumbled as
they passed the vacant Table
Rock school house and jour
neyed on some six miles to,
the school building at Sams
Valley.
The recent, rather warm
and interesting campaign re
minded us of the year we
were asked to manage the
campaign in Jackson county
of the late Julius Meier, when
he ran for governor. Our
better half didn't want us to
get mixed up in politics, so
we didn't. If we had been
managing some of the local
campaigns in the last elec
tion, we think ve could have
done a much better job than
the candidates did for them
selves. One thing we learned dur
ing the campaign was that
practically all lawyers "are
crooks. Our informant, we
surmise, didn't know how
near he was to getting under
our skin, as one grandfather
was a lawyer, and we have
a lawyer nephew in Portland,
whom we know to be honest,
and we think a lot of.
Mrs. Dean Inglis, and two
sons, Michael and Craig, of
Mountain View, Calif., have
returned to their home after
a few days visit at the home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
J. L. Nealon.
The few showers we have
received here were helpful to
growing crops, but not plen
tiful enough to do much for
late sown grain, according to
farmers, who are busy using
different types of irrigation
on land dried out with high
temperatures and winds.
Since this was written, we
had plenty of rain, the rain
gauge at the Table Rock store
measuring .8 of an inch,
Tuesday morning, for the
past 24 hours, and 1.15 since
the first of the month.
The following changes in
locations will be taking place
in the local community in the
near future: Benny Peak, of
Central Point, former herds
man for John Cupp, will have
charge of the cattle on the
Table Top ranch, and with
his wife and two children will
occupy the house to be vacat
ed by the Abe Halfhill fam
ily, who will move into the
house now occupied by the
Oick Reum family, who are
looking for a new location.

Members of the Sams Val
ley Grange, at their meeting
Saturday night, were treated
to an outstanding program
which was highlighted by the
speech of David Mack. "The
Curse of Bigness," the speech,
that has won him fame in
many places. The title was
followed throughout in show
ing how bigness can in time
eliminate many of our cher
ished ways of life, including
the family farm, one time
called the backbone of the
nation.
Man, 75f Found;
Suicide Foiled
Tazewell, Tenn. (UPI)
A 75-year-old man who set
out to commit suicide was
found alive Tuesday even
though he had eaten only
hickory tree leaves for , 10
days.
John Logan Minton was
found under a tree, weak, fa
mished and his., clothes wet
from a heavy rain.
He was reported "doing all
right" today at a Middles
boro, Ky., hospital. The aged
man said he ate only leaves
from hickory trees during his
wandering through rugged
woodland.
Authorities said Minton
disappeared May 25 after
saying he was going to drown
himself.

in Cuban Drive

Havana (UPI) At least
40 persons have been killed
in the all-out government
drive to wipe out the rebel
stronghold of Fidel Castro in
eastern Cuba's Oriente Prov
ince, reports from Santiago
said today.
There was no immediate
indication how the losses
were divided between the
government troops and the
rebels.
The reports said the gov
ernment force of 8,000 to
10,000 men which was thrown
against the rebels Sunday in
cludes the American trained
and equipped First battalion
of the First Infantry regi
ment, a mixed tank regiment,
a combat engineers battalion
and the 7th Artillery regi
ment. Major Combat
Center of the fighting, de
scribed as a "major combat,"
is the town of Buey Arriva,
near Bayamo, north of the
Sierra Maestra mountains, re
liable sources said.
They said the government
troops were support by fight
er planes, bombers, tanks and
artillery.
The ' rebels were reported
to be fighting fiercely and to
have riddled two army fight
ers with anti-aircraft fire but
the planes made it safely
back to landing strips.
Private sources said some
of the junior officers leading
the army detachments only
recently returned from the
United States, where they re
ceived training in mountain
warfare.
