The Pediiricia
A very important specialty
is pediatrics, or the study and
care of children and their
diseases.
A pediatrician
starts out by
studying sev
en or tight
years in col
lege and med
ical school
and then hav
ing an intern
ship. Then he
will work for
thre yeara or mora in some
great Children's Hospital.
A good pediatrician has to
bt an able diagnostician in
order to tell what is wrong
with child who is running
t high fever. He has to know,
first, about most of the dis
eases of adults, and then he
must know all the diseases
thtt are particularly likely to
attack his small patients. He
hs to know a great deal
about all the many infections
with bacteria and viruses,
and what can be done to com
bat them.
He has- to knew all about
colds, and indigestions and
diarrheas. He has to become
skillful in quickly recogniz
ing the child who is seriously
and dangerously ill. When I
was writing my book on
Danger Signals, or the symp
toms tftat no one should dis
regard (Heines Publishing
Co., Minneapolis), I dropped
in on pediatrician friend of
mine, and asked him how he
told the difference between
the child with just a high fev
er, who would soon recover,
nd the child who was very
ill and likely to succumb. He
ttlid he paid little attention
to thg height of the fever if
th child was bright and
thowed some interest in his

toys; the child who worried
him was the one who was
toxic and apathetic who
just lay in his bed and did
not pay attention to anyone.
I asked, "How do you tell
the difference between a
stomach ache and acute ap
pendicitis?" and ne said, "If
the child keeps his mother
up all night, it is appendi
citis." A good pediatrician is
the best friend a family with
several growing children can
have. '
When A Divarce la Wrong
Many a time I have seen a
childless' couple who, after
years of unhappy bickering,
were ready for a separation.
I did not try to argue them
out of it, because I could not
see where it would do any
one any harm. But many
another time I have talked
an unhappy couple out of a
divorce because they had
small children. As I said to
the husband, "I can see why
you are very resentful against
your wife who has often
made you unhappy, but,
those two adorable little girls
of yours surely you have
nothing against them; they
have done you no harm. If
you leave them, you will hurt
them greatly." And the man
said, "Yes, you are right; I'll
stick it out."
There have been other
cases in which I agreed-with
wise marriage counselors
who say it is much better for
the children that a violent or
alcoholic or brutal or cruel
father be gotten out of the
home. It Is too hard on the
children's nervous system to
have the man around, con
stantly abusing their mother.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his
readers .will understand that
