too beautcful for her own
good. She has no girl friends
because they are all jealous
of her. The boys flock around
her and confuse her so much
that she doesn't know which
she likes. She often comes
home crying because some
boy tried to get fresh with
her.
I want Karen to go to co
left because I feel everyone
should hfive a good education
and I want her to meet nicer
kinds of men. The problem is
that she isn't interested in
schoolwork. She says she
wants to be a model. I am
worried about what will hap
pen if she gets into work that
exposes her more to men. who
might try to take advantage
of her.

think being beautiful i all
a bed of roses, but believe me,
it isn't. Even my teacher at
school are jealous and nasty.
They think I'm dumb, just be
cause of my looks. I get aw
ful marks at school. I prob
ably couldn't get into college
even if I tried
Besides, if I went to a girl's
college I would never have
any friends. If I went to a
co-ed school I wouldn't be
able to concentrate on my
work because I'd be bothered
all the time. ,
If I went in for modeling
could make good ' money
without half "trying.-1 would
have good times, and I would
ot of people. Maybe
would travel and meet im
portant men like Ali Kahn or
the Prince of Monaco. I don't
mean hem, exactly, but men
like that. My looks wouldn't
be a handicap.

Tha Council:.. Poor, poor
Karen! She has a handicap,
indeed. It is not her looks,
however, but what is in her
head. A second handicap is
her mother.
Mrs. T. D. is filled with
misconceptions and has suc
ceeded in planting them alj
quite firmly in her daughter.
We'll try straightening out a
few of the facts:
1 Girls are not unfriendly
toward Karen because of her
beauty. They are unfriendly
because Karen is unfriendly.
Many exquisite girls are quite
popular with women because
they go out toward them -ith I

2 Boys don't get fresh
vith Karen because of her
beauty. They do it because
he invites it.. In some way
she shows them what she ex
pects of them. Unfortunately,
she feels she has nothing to
offer but physical charms.
3 Teachers aren't nasty to
Karen because of her beauty
They may get nasty because
it is exasperating to try to
teach something to a blank
pretty face, which reveals no
interest and no effort at un
derstanding. t Karen's chances of 'be
coming a successful model in
her present frame of mind
are about as small ai her
chances of getting into a top
college. She needs to learn
that she not only can't suc
ceed "without half trying,"
but she is dooming herself to
a pretty dismal life of mirror
gazing and wild daydreaming.
Mrs. T.D. had better snap
ouf of her obsession about
Karen's beauty and help her
daughter understand that
good looks are an asset in life
only if they are accompanied
by a strong interest in other
things and people.

Job Opportunities
For Summer 'Open'
Washington (UPI) There
are still "wide open" oppor
tunities for summer jobs in
ice cream and soda pop firms,
gasoline stations and retort
hotels and camps. But pros
pects are slimmer in construc
tion and factory work for stu
dents seeking vacation jobs.
Labor Secretary Jamea P.
Mitchell outlined the situation
in an open letter Monday to
the four million high school
and college students expected
to seek vacation work this
year. He said it will take
"planning on our part and
investigation "and a good deal
of, resourcefulness if you are
to get the job you want."

Auio Makers Work
Without Contract
Detroit (UPI) Workers
in the plants of the nation's
three giant auto firms were
on the job Monday without a
union contract.
The manufacturers, with
an acknowledged recession
advantage at the bargaining
table, refused to extend con
tracts past their expiration
dates for continued negotia
tion. The United Auto Work
ers said it had no intention
of increasing that advantage
with a strike which would, in
effect, give the companies a
free shutdown period to re
duce their inventories.
Negotiations will continue.
The companies pledged
themselves to observe the
standards of the expired con
tracts except for the checkoff
collection of union dues.
Panama hats are not made
in Panama, but in Ecuador
where their production is a
major industry.
