Douglas Aircraft's giant DC8
rose successfully off Long
Beach Municipal Airport Fri-
day and roared out over the
Pacific on its maiden flight.
The DC8 lifted off the run-
way at exactly 3,500 feet, its
four jet engines streaking
black smoke as it turned over
nearby Seal Beach and went
into "full maneuvers" at 95
per cent of the speed of
sound.
It flew a special flight pat
tern set by the Civil Aeronaj
tics administration at an alti
tude of 31,000 feet. It was ex
pected to land at Edwards Air
Force Base on California's Mrs

hours.
