State Hopes For
Low Traffic Toll
Salem (UPI) If Oregon
can go through the remaining
hours of May without a traffic
death, despite the expected
heavy holiday traffic, the
state will turn in the lowest
monthly death count in 32
months.
Twenty May deaths had
been reported in traffic as of
Thursday morning. The last
time the state recorded only
20 deaths in a month was in
April, 1955.
State traffic safety officials
were keeping their fingers
crossed, hoping that drivers
will exercise common sense
during the holiday.
During the first quarter of
1958 more than seven people
per day were so seriously in
jured in Oregon traffic
crashes that they had to be
carried from the scene, the
Department of Motor Vehicles
said.
