    guried Treasure
Savage Automatic
Turns Up in Africa
Portuguese West Africa
seems an unlikely place for a
man to find one of the rarer
weapons produced by the
Savage Arms company, espe
cially when he's a merchan
dise buyer for gift shops.
Nonetheless, it is -because
of a merchandise buyer's
African trip that an arms col
lector I know came into pos
session of one of the rare 1905
Model .45 Savage automatics.
Why the buyer bought it
was only because of its carved
ivory grips. He felt, and quite
justly, that the craftsmanship
of the unknown native artist
was easily worth the $100
price, regardless of the value
of the pistol itself.
The collector bought the
gun primarily for its rarity as
a weapon. Only a few hun
dred were produced. It is a
blued weapon with a five-inch
barrel on which are stamped
the words "Savage Arms Co.
Utica, N.Y. U.S.A., 1905 Cal.
.45." Its magazine capacity is
eight pounds.
How it got to Portuguese
West Africa is probably due
to the fact that soon after
World War I the Portuguese
government placed large or
ders for sidearms with the
Utica firm. Thus an interest
in Savage Arms was inevit
ably stimulated among Por
tuguese Army and Navy of
ficers.
The condition of the pistol
was good. It was in excellent
working order, and though it
had seen enough use so that
the rifling was somewhat
worn, there still was several
thousand rounds to be fired
before it would lose its accii
racy.
The value of such a gun
wth ordinary checked walnut
or hard rubber grips is from
$200 to $300, but because of
the exquisite carving on the
ivory grips, and the high
grade of the ivory itself
from near the tusk tips of
fairly young elephants the
collector reluctantly paid the
$400 rice finally insisted on.

LOVE LETTER IS HIGHEST PRICED COLLECTOR'S ITEM
Though the world's highest
priced and most rarely quot
ed collector's item is the in
discreet love letter, the com
pletely proper, fully discreet
love letter may sometimes
have a monetary value, too.
I learned this recently when
a stamp dealer showed me
10 envelopes he had purchas
ed, each one bearing a 50
centavo Mexican air mail
stamp. They were postmarked
over a two-week period in
Mexico City in late Septem
ber, 1929.
The stamp, printed" in a
dark blue and claret red,
showed an eagle flying over
a mountain - edged plain.
Above him were the words
CORREOS AERROS, Spanish
for air mail. On most of the
envelopes the stamp was only
lightly cancelled.
"But why so many?" I
asked. -
The stamp dealer grinned.
"That was what I asked the
lady who brought them in,"
he said. ,
Her story was that her fi
ance had had to take a busi
ness trip to Mexico back in
1929, just before the crash,
and had written her a long
letter every night of the stay.
She had carefully saved them,
then rediscovered them only
a few days before.
"And in the meantime, she
had become a grass widow
and, so decided to- salvage
something out of these senti
mental relics?" I asked.
"That was what I assumed,"
the dealer said. "But the
facts are she and her hus
band have been so happily
married they are taking an
anniversary trip to Mexico
City, and she thought it would
be both romantic and appro
priate for the old envelopes
'to contribute."
. The contribution of the en
velopes was substantial
$250.
The dark blue and claret
50-centavo air mail stamp,
unwatermarked as these were,
has a catalogue value of $30,
used or unused. It is worth
somewhat more on the en
velope. '
CURRIER & IVES FOX HUNT PRINTS FIRM'S BEST
Though fox hunting with
horse and hounds is scarcely
a popular American pastime,
there seems to be a never
ending market for mementoes
of the sport and books and
pictures dealing with it.
An indications lies in the
number and value of the Cur
rier & Ives prints , dealing
with the subject.
So far as I have been able
to find, there are from 12 to
15 fox hunting pictures put
out by the famous firm, and
their values range from $75
to $250.
One set of four and it may
be five is made up of small
prints, each- one measuring
about 8 by 12 inches. They
are dated in 1848 and they
bear the imprint of Nathaniel
Currier. The first line of the
title on each one is "Fox
Chase." The second lines dif
fer, including "Throwing
Off," "Gone Away," "In Full
Cry," and "The Death." Their
values range from $90 to
$125.
A still more valuable se
ries consists of four undated
prints of medium size, about
11 by 15 inches. They have
a Currier & Ives imprint and
were probably produced - In
the late 1850's or even '60's.
The first words of their titles
are "Fox Hunting."
The values of this larger
series range up to $250 eacri,
depending on the condition
of the print, such as the width
of the margin, the amount of
foxing or mildew stains that
are found on it, and sun
fading.
Framing also may make a
difference in that while it
cannot detract from the value
of a print, it can add to it.
For example,1 a print worth
$200 would still be worth that
much even though in a frame
that might be completely
worthless.
Some of the Currier & Ives
prints are said to be merely
copies of others that were
put out by English artists. If
so, that does not detract from
their value. At least, it
wouldn't in the eyes of most
buyers.

Salem Nearly 9.5 million
forest tree seedlings which
were provided by the state
forestry department went in
to the reforestation of approx
imately 12,000 acres of for
est land, largely in state and
private ownership, according
to Assistant State , Forester
Don Maus.
The forester stated that ap
proximately 5.6 million of
the seedlings went into the
reforestation of 7,100 acres of
state-owned land, most of it
under the rehabilitation proj
ect which is being carried out
by the department. Other
state planting included state
parks, state game commission
areas and various public
lands which were planted by
the various schools and youth
organisations. Forty acres
were planted in the Medford
municipal watershed.
Balance of Acreage
The balance of the acreage
consisted of privately owned
forest land, including wood
land areas planted by the
farmers, industrial planta
tions and those areas refor
ested under the Oregon con
servation act. In all it is esti
mated that nearly 4,900 acres
were planted on the private
lands, Maus stated.
"Demands for planting
stock far exceeded available
seedlings in spite of the fact
that we were able to secure
200,000 from a California
state nursery and an addition
al 600,000 from the state of
Washington," Maus stated.
"The balance of the trees
came from the Oregon forest
nursery near Corvallis."
Species Planted
From the standpoint of spe
cies planted, the Douglas fir
headed the list with 7,575,173
seedlings. More than five mil
lion of these went into the
state's forest rehabilitation
project, largely in the Tilla
mook burn, Maus added. Oth
er species in the higher brack
ets included white fir 452,
371, grand fir 341,901 and
ponderosa pine 277,486. Maus
pointed out that the demands
for the firs came from the in
dividuals either establishing
or maintaining Christmas
tree plantations.
"Last year the state estabr
lished a new nursery hear
Elkton and the first of the
two-year-old seedlings will be
available for distribution this
fall," Maus stated. "This will
bring the production of the
two nurseries up to approxi
mately 15,000,000 trees and
we expect a material increase
in production for the follow
ing planting season."
