Doubt Expressed On
Stompanato Killing
Hollywood (UPI) Doubt
over who killed Lana Turn
er's lover, Johnny Stompan
ato, was expressed (Thursday
in an amended $750000 dam
age suit on file in Superior
court.
The amended action,
brought og behalf of Stom
panato's Iu-yearbld son, John
Stompanato III, now living in
Hammond, Ind., was filed
yesterday by Atty. William
Pollack. o
Pollack's newOversion of an
original suit naming Miss
Turner, her 14-year-old
daughter, Cheryl, and thert)tiff alleges that both of said
girl's father, Stephen Crane,
expressed doubt as to who
might have stabbed Stompan
ato to death last April.4.
Wording of Suit
The new suit contended
that the boy's guardian, tele
vision producer Jack Harris,
didn't know exactly what
happened the night Stompan
ato. was stabbed in Lana's
Beverly Hills home. It said:
"For that reason he (Har
ris) is in doubt as to wheth
er it was defendant Cheryl
Crane or defendant Lana
Turner who did the actual
stabbing or whether the one
assisted the other therein."
"Because of said doubt,"
the complaint went on, "plain-
defendants did inflict the said
stab wound in the body of
John Stompanato."
"Justifiable"
A coroner's jury ruled that
the slaying of Stompanato,
handsome ex-body guard of
former mobster Mickey Co
hei was "justifiable homi
cide" after hearing testimony
that Cheryl did it to protect
her beautiful blonde mother. ,
Cheryl was made a ward
of the court and placedQtem-
porarily with her grandrrioth- tract to General Construction
company, Portland, for rein
forcement and raising five
piers and removing a pier
from the Portland-Vancouver
interstate bridge.
er, Mrs. Mildred Turner. . a
final hearing to determine the
girl's future is scheduled for
June 26.
Attorneys for both Miss
Turner and Crane filed ac
tions last week asking that
the original damage suite pre
pared by Pollack be thrown
out.
The amended complaint
dropped allegations that
Stompanato was lying down
when he was stabbed.
