the world of children's liter
ature, is the awarding of the
Newberry and Caldecott med
als for distinguished writing
and illustration of children's
books.
While the awards are ac
tually not to be conferred un
til July 15, at a banquet hon
oring the winners during the
American Library associa
tion's San Francisco confer
ence, announcement of the
winners has already been
made.
The Newberry medal for
the most distinguished con
tribution to Qmerican chil
dren's literature goes to Har
old Keith for "Rifles for
Watie," published by the
Thomas Y. Crowell company.
This is one of the most excit
ing books published for chil
dren in many seasons, a full
blooded novej of the Western
campaign of the Civil war
and the part played in it by
the Cherokee Indians.
Brings Fiction to War
Says the ALA bulletin, "It

nally and imaginatively, with
a courageous realism and
with a compassion that em

sues involved. The Author
grew up near the Cherokee
country in which his story is
