Federal Court Jury
Reverses Decision
Portland (UPD A federal
court jury here apparently re
versed itself late Friday after
bringing in a verdict of guilty
in the mail fraud trial of Clar
ence Peddicord and six co-defendants.
The panel of six men and
six wnen returned verdicts
of "guilty" Friday afternoon
convicting all seven of. either
mail fraud or.. conspiracy to
commit the fraud. But hours
later the jurors were appar
ently deadlocked on the ques
tion of guilt or innocence of
all the defendants.
The unusual courtroom ac
tion began after the jury had
been out for 27 hours. U.S.
Judge William East had ques
tioned the panel twice and
asked the jurors if the verdict
was unanimous.
They replied twice In the
affirmative, East said. Then
the judge ordered the jurors
to reconsider their verdict
against one of the seven ac
cused and the panel later re
quested, and received, verdict
forms for all the defendants.
Inasmuch as Judge East
had not formally eccepted the
earlier verdict, the jury could
still change its verdict, court
officials said.
