Is That So?
Rome: May 30 Via TWA!
The warmth of a late Roman
spring is consoiderable and
very pleasant, so much so that
it seems impossible the cold
est place in Italy is only 70
miles away.
That's a fact. It is not in
the Alps, hundreds of miles
to the north, but due east and
a little south, in the Abruzzi,
in the heart of the Appenines,
the spine of Italy.
As a result, I can believe
the trout of Italy are excel
lent, as our own. But I know
the pike of the Tiber are
superb. '
I had one today, caught 20
miles above the city, and I
was surprised to learn that
even up there the Tiber is
just as dirty looking as where
it flows past the Regina Coeli
prison, not so very far from
St. Peter's
The reason for the Tiber's
color Vergil called it "yel
low" 2,000 years ago is that
the tremendous amount of
silt it sweeps down to the sea.
Up to 50 years ago, the swift
flowing river gave Rome a big
flood problem, but today huge
dikes of stone channel the
water through the metropolis
for its final 20-mile rush to
the sea.
One would think that wou'd
mean a big delta at Ostia, like
our Mississippi's, but - it
doesn't. In 2,000 years the
land has advanced only two
miles. The reason is the sea
bottom falls swiftly away and
a powerful current distributes
the silt all along the coast.
After a look at the Colos
seum where over 5,000 wild
animals were killed at its 100-
day opening celebration in 80
A.D., we. drove out into the
campagna, beating the heavy
rush of late afternoon traffic

MAIL TRIBUNE, Medfori,
By EUGENE BURNS
Ranger-Naturalist
For centuries the campagna
was one of the most fever
ridden spots in the world, but
now, thanks in part to the
eucalyptus trees and the way
the city pushes the country
back, the pest of malaria is
pretty well gone.
What the quck-growing eu
calyptus does is to dry out
the soil. Thus it lessens the
breeding area of the pestifer
ous anopheles.
But there is still much of
the typical Roman landscape
left. Twenty minutes or so
outside the city, the dome of
St. Peter's in easy sight, we
saw plenty of cypress, ilex
and some stone-pines.
And we also saw a Roman
fox, a little fellow, sitting on
a hillock, on his haunches,
ears erect, intently watching
the Italian equivalent of a
gopher hole.
