contract renewal is a final

ther has declared the union
will "never" sign the indus
try offer of two-year contract
renewals.
He said the union must
have better unemployment
benefits, pensions and job se
curity to solve the basic hu
man problems of the jobless,
the retired and workers dis
placed by the closing of

From Fifth Wife

George Randolph Hearst,
52, eldest son of the late pub
lisher, was divorced today by
his fifth wife, former New
York stage comedienne Col-
lette Lyons, on grounds of
mental cruelty.
Mrs. Hearst obtained an in
terlocutory decree of divorce
in Superior Court, ending
more than two years of liti
gation which has shifted at
times to the federal courts in
San Francisco and Los An
geles.
The couple was married
March 6, 1952, in Los Ange
les and separated Nov. 24,
1955.

To Refuse Arms

United States and Britain will
turn . down Tunisia's urgent
new request for arms during
present French-Tunisian ten
sion, diplomatic officials said
today.
They said shipment of wea
pons now most likely would
fan the flame of unrest in
North Africa and serve no
useful purpose. .
Tunisian President Habib
Bourguiba disclosed he had
sent a new appeal to both the
United States and Britain for
arms. He said the weapons
were needed because French
forces in Tunisia were not
under control of the crisis
ridden Paris government and
might get out of hand.
Some 22,000 French forces
are stationed in Tunisia under
terms of the treaty granting
Tunisia independence from
France. Tunisia has been de
manding their withdrawl.
Britain confirmed that Tu
nisia asked for weapons re
cently. The State department
parried all questions on the
request with a "no comment."
Informed sources confirm
ed, however, that the new
Bourguiba request has been
received. They refused to
spell out exactly what he
wanted.

The big night finally ar
rived for the 1958 Frosh Hop
on May 24, at 7:30 in the Hed
rick Junior High gymnasium.
"Sayonara" was the theme of
the ninth graders. Carroll
Graber, and Duane Richard
son constructed and painted
the scenes to decorate the
auditorium in appropriate
"oriental" motif.
The dance, strictly for the
ninth graders, also included
a selected group of eighth
graders to serve as waiters
and check room attendants.
Dance music was furnished
by the Crater High dance
band. The king and queen of
the evening crowned were
Pat Dunlevy and Linda Mor
lan. The royal court consisted
of Mike Monroe, Nancy Dona
hue, Jerry Gastineau, Pam
Gilkison, Bruce Bray, Steve
Cummins, Kim Griffin, Pat
Cranston, Cassie Thompson
and Chris Prentice.
Friday, May 30, is the date
for the Memorial day vaca
tion. Hedrick students will be
getting out of school for the
holidays.
The eighth grade girls at
Hedrick entertained eighth
grade girls from Lone Pine,
Howard, and Central Point
schools Monday, May 19.
Field events, volleyball, and
softball were among games
played. Also 10 minutes for
each team on the trampoline
were enjoyed. Afterwards en
tertainment was put on by
groups from the different
schools. Refreshments of
cookies and punch were
served.
The final test schedule is
as follows: May 26, art test;
May 27, vocalTnusic; May 28,
shop test; May 29, home eco
nomics; June 2, English, math
and algebra; June 3, civics,
geography science and his
tory; June 4, Latin and Span
ish. School will officially close
on June 4 with an award as
sembly. Instead of coming back to
school Friday, June 6, each
student is asked to bring a
stamped and self - addressed
envelope so the schools can
mail his report card.
The ninth grade took the
Iowa Achievement tests in
the mornings of May 19 and
20. Students in Medford took
the same tests last year and
our system's upper grades
generally scored above averr
age. The tests, part of a na
tionwide survey by the Uni
versity of Iowa, were pre
pared under the direction of
Dr. E. F. Lindquist, professor
and statistician at the Univer
sity of Iowa.
The object of the survey,
which included nine tests,
was to establish national
norms for 1958.
Students were tested on ba
sic social concepts, English
expression, vocabulary, sci
ence and math. Last year's
class had one of the highest
ratings in Medford history.
The seventh grade also took
I.Q. tests on Monday and the
eighth on Tuesday afternoon.
Hedrick held its annual
open house May 22, which
was highlighted by a style
show and various displays.
Tht style show was one which
included various scenes high
lighting , different styles of
clothes. Commentators were
Suzy Thompson, Jerry Gasti
neau, Linda Samuelson and
Jim Frake.
The orchestra, under the
direction of John Drysdale,
and the Hedrick band and
dance band -directed by Ron
Bartlett played pieces at vari
ous intervals. Displays includ
ed shop projects, directed by
Duane Richardson; art proj
ects. Miss Catherine Fonken;
math projects. Bruce Nelson;
and NRA, Bruce Nelson;
book, Mrs. Mildred Rogers
and map displays, Robert
Huff.
The first annual science
fairwas held with eight firsts
given in various fields and
many seconds and thirds
awarded also. There were
over 200 projects in the fair,
which was directed by James
Miller and Monte Kounz.
Judges were chosen from the
MHS faculty.
