Jacksonville Man Held
For Grants Pass
Junior Dale Mcvay, 28
route 1, box 5, Jacksonville,
was lodged in Medford city
jail early this morning on a
charge of vagrancy and is be
ing' held for Grants Pass au
thorities. Mcvay was arrested by po
lice when he was found sleep
ing in an automobile that was
reported stolen earlier by
Grants Pass police. The ve
hicle was parked behind 1209
Court St., Medford, when it
was discovered on a routine
check by a patrolman.
The vehicle was registered
to Robert E. Patterson, Grants
Pass, who had reported it
stolen Wednesday evening.

Sclerosis Society (270 Park
Ave., N.Y., 17), now has 30,
000 members. Certainly all
persons with this disease
should belong. Membership
will take away some of that
terrible feeling of loneliness
that many persons have when
they suffer for years with a
rare disease. Also, patients
with means can help with
the campaign for research.
All patients with the disease,
when they belong to the
society can be sure that if any
new and hopeful treatment is
discovered, they will immed
itely be notified.
It is a gieat thing for all
persons with multiple scler
osis to keep up their morale
to keep up their hope that
a cure will be found, and to
keep busy and useful.
Sl Cancer Family
Many ask if cancer is
ever hereditary. Some forms
of it are certainly hereditary
in some animals, and among
human beings there are fam
ilies in which cancer is com
mon. Research workers have
found that cancer' is several
more times common in the
sisters of women with cancer
of the breast than in the sisters-in-law.
However, inmost
families in which there is
much cancer the close rela
tives must never feel doom
ed; they must not get fright
ened. All they need do is to
be more careful than other
people are to be well examin
ed for cancer at least once a
year.
In a family I know, the or
iginal group consisted of two
boys and five girls, all of
whom grew up and married.
One of the men had four
children, none with canCer.
His brother had one child
who did not have cancer. One
of the women died childless
of tuberculosis. A sister died
of cancer of the rectum. She
had four childen. I regret I
do not know what happened
to them. A sister died of can
cer of the breast. Of her three
children, one daughter died
of cancer of the womb; one
of cancer (source unknown);
and a son of cancer (source
unknown).
Another of the original five
sister had three boys and a
girl. The girl had a cancer
of the breast as did her daugh
ter. I do not know about the
three sons. Another sister
died of cancer of the womb.
She had two boys and a girl.
One of the men had a cancer
of the rectum. I do not know
about the illnesses of the oth
er two.
If I were a member of this
family, I would not get pan
icky but I would get examin
ed often because so common
ly, by the time an internal
cancer produces symptoms it
is too late for a cure. One
must have the thing cut out
before it produces symptoms.
Heredity and Heart Attacks
The statisticians of the Met
ropolitan Life Insurance com
pany recently looked up their
experience with more than
15,000 insured persons who
had reported having two or
more close relativ: with dis
eases of the heart, .blood ves
sels, or kidneys, all acquired
before the age of 60. The mor
tality among policy holders
with such a family history (to
whom insurance had been is
sued at standard premlim
rates) and was about 40 per
cent higher than that for
standard or ordinary risks,
and most of the excess mor
tality was attributable to an
abnormally high death-rate
from diseases of the heart
and arteries.

Among those insured per
sons who, in addition to the
poor family history, were
slightly over-weight or had
a slight elevation in blood
pressure, the mortality was
70 per cent higher than the
average.
A Strenuous Cur
A woman writes to tell me
of her miraculous arthritis
cure. She says that, because
of a wound in her hand, her
doctor gave her some tetanus
antitoxin to which, years be- j
fore' she had become sensi
tized. Because of this, she
got giant hives all over her, j
and her eyes swelled shut.
To relieve this, the doctor
gave her injections of adren
alin, which also shook her
up. But a few days later she
found her arthritis gone, and
now she wants to know if
the doctors will be interested
in buying her new arthritis
cure.
As so often happens in
these cases, I have to tell the
lady that we phyicisians have
long known of such cures,
and some years ago we used
to try to cure a number of
chronic diseases by giving the
patient an injection of ty
phoid vaccine so large that
we produced a severe chill
and some fever. If I rememb
er correctly, it was the Ro
man poet Martial who first
noted the fact that some in
sane persons will recover aft
er an attack of malaria, and
some years ago a physician
Dr. von Jauregg got a
Nobel prize "for giving mal
aria to persons with a certain
type of insanity.
When I was a lad it was
known that an attack of ery
sipelas would sometimes cure
a cancer of the leg, or a pneu
monia might cure a chronic
disease such as asthma. When
I see such a happening, I. im
agine a man (our body) who
has long been annoyed by a
relative who has remained,
uninvited, in his house. Then
one day in came a burglar
who "got the man so angry
that he threw down the front
steps not only the burglar,
but the relative as well!

to put down a three-week-old
rebellion, was beefed up by
18 new American-made light
tanks today.
At the same time, moder
ate opposition leaders made
conciliatory moves to end the
violence that has kept the
government of pro-Western
President. Camille Chamoun
on the verge of a crisis.
The tanks, M41 Walker
Bulldogs, arrived Wednesday
aboard a U. S. military trans
port. They were part of a nor
mal U. S. military aid pro
gram but were sent ahead of
schedule because of the out
break of violence in Leban
on. Lebanese police and gen
darmes sealed off the Beirut
dock area where the tanks
were being delivered from
U. S. Arnrsi Ordnance stocks
in Bremerhaven, Germany.
On the political scene, the
Moderate Deputy Raymond
Edde began efforts to per
suade other oppostion leaders
to accept Premier Sami Solh's
promise that President Cha
moun would not run for a
second term. The constitu
tion now bars consecutive
terms for one man.

to get the Lebanese so inter
ested in politics they would
stop fighting.
