Emotions Guide
Shopping Tour
Chicago (IP) When a wom
an "picks up a little some
thing" in the store she is not
just buying something she
needs, she is revealing her
emotions, her desires, her
social longings.
This is what Dr. Ernest
Dichter" says in a report on
his study" of shopping habits
conducted for. the Paraffined
Carton Research Council.
Package selection allows
the customer "to express her
own image of herself," Dr,
Dichter said.
In interviews with consum
ers, the study group learned
that most consumers have a
natural desire to achieve high
er status. This desire exerts a
powerful influence on packag
ing preferences.
And this appeal to emotion
al and psychological needs is
being recognized by package
designers in creating contain
ers.
One consumer, when asked
about a perfume purchase,
told her interviewers, "The
box is so good-looking and
the bottle is so swanky, you'd
think it cost twenty dollars an
ounce."
Extensive research, said
Dichter, has shown that
"status" is but one . of six
standards that buyers them
selves have set up in judging
packages. ,
The other five: convenience
in carrying, adaptability to
storage, security that the pro-
duct inside is of quality, de
pendability of the manufact
urer, and aesthetic satisfac
tion in the visual appeal of
the package.
A Gallup survey recently
asked people what one section
or feature of their daily news
paper they found most useful
Advertising headed the list.
