Former Teacher Dies

Cave Junction Word has
been received that Mrs. Lilli
Shoemaker died at her son's
some in Scottsville, Ariz., re
cently. Mrs. Shoemaker was a
former teacher at the Selma
school and had taught in the
old Central school be
fore it was dismantled. When
she retired from teaching here
a year ago, she was honored
by a farewell party given by
her many friends. Most of
them" were her former pupils.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Quinn
and daughter, Ilene, of
O'Brien have moved to Med
ford, where Quinn is employ
ed by Ross and Olson mill.
Les Archer was elected
chairman of the board at the
Fourth 'Quarterly Conference
of the Immanuel Methodist
church of Cave Junction, held
Friday evening. May 16. Elect
ed as stewards were Mrs.
Vernon Larson, Art Kellert,
Ray Jones and Lucius Robin
son. Mrs. Lucius Robinson and
a Mrs. George Thrasher are
communion stewards and Mrs.
Ron Prather, recording ste

O'Brien Birthday club

week to benefit Mrs. Robert
Cross, who left Wednesday
for Los Angeles to undergo
extensive treatments. Mrs.
Cross was accompanied by
her mother, Mrs. Harold
Gregg. Little Roberta Cross
is staying with the Vester
McDonalds until her mother
returns.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Allen
have just returned from a 10
day vacation trip which in
cluded a stop over in Victoria
en route to Vancouver Island,
where they were guests of
Allen's brother, Bob. On the
return trip they stopped in
Winthrop, Wash., their form
er home, for visits with old
friends.
Jean Nolan was honored by
the O'Brien Birthday club at
the home of Faye Warren
Wednesday. Those attending
were Emma Lemm, Allouie
McDonald, Grace Kubli, Ann
Turnbull, Louise Woodbury,
Melva McDonald and Hazel
Slanaker. Sending gifts but
not able to attend were
Martha Mae Cross and Hazel
Gregg.
Refreshments of sand
wiches, cake and coffee were
served by the hostess, who
was assisted by Mrs. Slanaker.
The Zuleima Nile club will
meet Tuesday, May 27, at 8
p.m. at the home of Clara
Hammer in Selma. Queen Lu
cille Rice of Medford will
make her official visit to the
club.
Mrs. Fred Salvage returned
Monday from a month's vaca
tion with her daughter, Mrs.
Al Hendrickson, of Granada
Hills, Calif. Mrs. Salvage en
tertained with a dinner for
old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Palmer of Sherman Oaks and
Mr. and Mrs. Knippel of Re
dondo Beach, Calif. Both fam
ilies are former residents of
the valley.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Ballard
were in Medford all last week
where they attended funeral
services for Mrs. Ballard's
brother, Girk Stagg, who suf
fered a cerebral hemorage.

voice from the dead was heard
in probate court as lawyers
strove to. prove the validity of
a contested will.
A tape recording of the will,
in the voice of the late S. H.
Allen, testator, was played in
court at the request of coun
sel for the estate. Allen died
in 1954, leaving a $17,000
estate.
A son, Asa, who was cut off
with $1, contested the will,
contending his father was
under conservatorship at the
time it was made.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Salvage
plan to attend the commence
ment exercises at Southern
Oregon college in Ashland,
Sunday, June 1, when their
nephew, Ted Temy, will re
ceive his diploma.

trict 13 American Legion,
was present at the American
Legion meeting in Cave Junc
tion Wednesday night, May
21. Dr. Stem, Glenn Morri
son, Post Commander, pre
sided. During the short business
meeting a tentative date for
the joint installation was set
for June 15. Also plans for a
picnic for all veterans, to be
held sometime in July, were
discussed. Definite plans for
the venture will be worked
out among all three veterans'
organizations.
The Illinois Valley High
school baccalaureate service
was held in the high school
gym Sunday, May 25 at 8
p.m. Don Brown, a member
of the teaching staff and
pastor of the Selma Baptist
church was the speaker.
Dudley Andre, fire chief of
the Illinois Valley Rural Fire
Protection district, reports
they have just received 750
feet of 2V2 inch hose. At the
regular fire drill Monday
night, all the hose was shifted
around on the three rigs so
that they are now all clasas A
fire trucks.
