Upper Applegat Grang
The first and second degrees
of the order were conferred
on the following candidates
when the Upper Applegate
Grange met in regular session
May 23: Edward G. and Clara
Flesher, Ivan and Inez Mc
Donough, R. L. and Elena
Christean, Alvin and Emma
Heffron, J. Stanley and Bar
bara Larson, Hester and Ruth
Knutzen.
Tableaux scenes arranged
by Sister Gladys Williams
were presented in conjunction
with the degree ritual, with
Sisters Irene Culy, Louise
Nordwick, and Mildred Black
participating. Sister Nell Ram
sey sang "My Faith Looks Up
to Thee" during the first of
these, and was joined by Sis
ter Mildred Redhead in a
duet, "Whispering Hope" dur
ing the second tableau. Pink
roses, snowballs, and ivy were
combined on the stage to form
a background for the presen
tation. It was voted to extend a
formal invitation to the Roxy
Ann degree team to confer the
third and fourth degrees in
Upper Applegate Grange Hall
June 27 and to invite all other
subordinate granges in the
county to bring their candi
dates at this time.
A resolution introduced at
the previous meeting was
passed under terms of which
Upper Applegate Grange
agreed to sell and convey the
site of the old Grange Hall at
McKee bridge to Donald E.
and Esther A. Fossen for the
sum of $625, and authorized
the Worthy Master and the
Grange Secretary to execute
a deed for this property.
Chaplain Mildred Redhead,
reporting for the Relief Com
mittee, stated Brothers Forbes
Brown and Hugh Scovell are
recovering from attacks of
arthritis that have kept them
at home for several weeks.
Sister Margaret Cantrall has
been ill with mumps. Sister
Ethel West is convalescing at
home following major sur
gery, and Sister Lena De-
Shazo is improving from in
juries sustained in an auto ac
cident last January.
Home Economics chairman
Edna Sawyer reported $25 for
a 4H scholarship to summer
school in Corvallis has been
turned, over to the Grange
treasurer. She further stated
that no meetings of the Home
Economics club were being
scheduled during the summer
months. '
A note of thanks and a con
tribution of $15 were received
from Upper Applegate Home
Extension Unit for use of the
Grange hall for their cotton
dress- workshop and their
home makers' festival.

of the conferring of the fifth
degree by Jackson County Po
mona Grange on Saturday
evening, May 24, in Central
Point Grange hall.
A brief report of the sur
prise visitation to Griffin
Creek Grange May 22 was
given by Worthy Master Men-
no Bachmann and Sister
Maude Bachmann, who repre
sented Upper Applegate
Grange at the gathering..
A sum of $60 was voted to
meet expenses of the Worthy
Master at State Grange con
vention in Eugene, and a mo
tion was passed to dispense
with the next regular meeting
June 13 since it will conflict
with the State Grange ses
sions.
In place of the regular liter
ary program, several of the
more important resolutions to
be considered at State Grange
were presented by the Worthy
Master, and following discus
sion of them by the members
present, he was instructed to
use his own discretion in vot
ing on them.

freshments of ice cream, cake,
and coffee were served. Sis
ters Elizabeth Nostrand and
Pearl Byrne and Brothers

Byrne made up the commit
tee. Assisting them in serving

I just happened onto a note
in a medical journal by a
physician who had evidently
lost all pa-
tience after
reading an ar
ticle by a psy
c h o a n alyst
who had ex
plain ed, ac
cording to the
weird theories
of his cult,
why some
Dr. Aivarei children suck
their thumbs. The doctor says,
"The article on the modern
concepts of tumb-sucking, if
you will excuse the slang, is
just so much tommy-rot." He
goes on to say that two out of
his four children are thumb
suckers, but they are remark
ably well-adjusted and normal
children who, furthermore,
have not deformed their up
per jaw or their upper teeth,
as they were supposed to do.
According to all the family
friends and neighbors, one of
the thumb-sucking children is
"relaxed, poised, self-confident
and out-going. He is as
normal a youngster as you can
find." The doctor is outraged
at the psychiatrist's statement
that the child has "regressed
to an autoerotic device." . As
the doctor says, "Why can't
we admit that some of our
traits are caused by hered
ity?" He might have gone on
to say, "Why can't a child
suck his thumb simply be
cause, like his father with his"
pipe, and his mother with her
cigarette, he is more comfort
able with something in the
mouth?"
I imagine that the occasion
al boy who sucks his thumb
until he is six or 10 has a
hereditary tendency to neur
osis or psychosis, but I do not
know, because I have not kept
records as to this. If any of
my readers have made obser
vations in regard to the char
acter differences between the
children who are confirmed
thumb-suckers and those who
quit early in life, I would like
to hear from them.
