Family
Council
Kale v. Harry has no man
ners at all.
Harry V I want to forget
myself when I go out
Kate V. My husband and
I have been married 15 years
and have a fine family of four
youngsters. On the whole we
have a happy marriage, but
there is one thing that has al
ways disturbed me very
much.
My husband has no manners
at all. When we go out to
gether, I am almost ashamed
to be with him. He doesn't
even hold the door open for
me or help me with my coat.
He lets me give my own order
to the waiter and his table
manners are so bad I worry
about whether people are
watching.
I have tried to teach Harry
to be different, but he Tesents
my criticism..
.Harry V. It is a little late
in life for Kate to start acting
like a teenager going to her
first party. I admit that I'm
wrong when I sometimes for
get to get the door open be
fore she does, but does that
call for a barrage of abuse?
Kate gives me a pain in tho
neck with all these petty
things, she is always thinking
about. When we are out all
she can think about is
whether people are looking at
ug and maybe they are saying
something about us.
,1 like to have a good time
when . I go out , and that
means to forget myself a little
bit.
Tha Council: Many men do
not realize that the "evening
out" for a woman represent '
far m6re than a little diver
sion. It is her one opportunity to
see and be seen by the world
outside her home. That's why
she takes so many paint
dressing and planning the
evening. If he is not seen to
the best possible advantage,
the evening loses much of its
charm, no matter how pleas
ant the entertainment may be.
It is natural for a man who
is constantly among people to
take a more casual view of
the opinions of others. Never
theless, many men take great
pleasure and pride in making
a real event of every evening
out with their wives.
Our guess is that such men
get a far bigger kick out of
the evening because they
see their wives glow with
pleasure.
However, we think Kate
emphasizes her worry about
whether "people are watch
ing" because . she is deeply
hurt by her husband's lack
of consideration and common
place good taste.
When a man opens- the door
for a woman, he is not only
performing a physical gervic
that he is. better equipped to
perform, but he shows that he
is aware of the woman's exist
ence as a human being of the
opposite sex. . When he neg
lects this fundamental cour
tesy, he comes rather close to
suggesting that he wishes he
were alone.
The same is true of the
other basic courtesies Kate
mentions. Men give orders to
the waiter because it is sim
pler for one person to give
the order- and the man i
taken to be the host. -
Men help women with thef r
coats because, it is sometimes
a struggle to get into one and
reasonable consideration calls
for a. helping hand. Withhold
ing such help implies an indif
ference which may be a dis
guise ' for actual hostility;
. We agree with Harry, that
on his evening out he should
"forget" himself. If he tries
to please his wife, we can al
most guarantee he will.
