Wives Have Emotional Stake In Husbands' Drunkenness
wife should feel that way, but
the other wives weren't inter
ested. The idea of "group psycho
therapy" is to promote each
member's insight into herself
and her emotional drives by a
thorough airing of the mutual
problems of all members
in this case, drunken hus
bands. MacDonald said very
little ""insight" was produced.

By DELOS SMITH
United Press Science Editor
New York OR The
psychological scientist who
stirred a furor by proposing
that the wives of some alcho
lics have an emotional stake
in their husbands' drunken
ness, confesses that his first
efforts to prepare such wives
to live with sobered husbands
didn't get very far.
Donald E. MacDonald of the
North Carolina state hospital
at Butner was seeking to
sober permanently a group of
two-fisted drinkers by psy
chological means. Once a
week he gathered their wives
around him to discuss just
what they'd do if the treat
ment worked.
Technically, this is called
"group psycho-therapy," and
MacDonald's role was that of
"group leader." The group
first was disrupted by a wife
who through session after ses
sion, demanded that the lead
er "prove that I want my hus
band to drink." She had heard
of MacDonald's theory.
Later her husband caught
her spiking his iced tea with
whiskey. She said it was an
"accident," but she never
mentioned that at the group
session for wives.
There were 10 wives in all.
Each monopolized at least one
session by explaining in de
tail why her husband was the
worst drunk of the lot and
why, -therefore, she was the
wife who was having the un
happiest time.
"Some women came a few
times apparently simply to
demonstrate to themselves the
futility of trying to do any
thing about their situation,
MacDonald reported to the
Yale University Center of
Studies on alcohol. "Others
had a 'chip on the shoulder'
defensiveness."
Woman Becomes Dissatisfied
One woman was frankly
dissatisfied because her hus
band was succeeding in leav
ing drink alone. Her talk
threatened "a complete dis
ruption" but fortunately she
stopped going to the meetings.
MacDonald tried to get the
other .wives to discuss why a

Senate Group Set
for Approval On
Foreign Aid Bill
Washington (IF) The
Senate foreign relations com
mittee prepared to stamp
final approval Thursday on its
own version of President
Eisenhower's foreign aid bill.
Prospects were good the Pres
ident might get even more
than he asked from the Sen
ate group.
But new storm clouds boil
ed up in the house over actual
funds for the aid prgoram.
Although all decisions were
tentative, the senate commit
tee Thursday restored all of
the 339 million dollars slash
ed by the House from the
President's original bill. It
also okayed a House increase
of eight million dollars for the
"Point Four" program of
technical assistance to for
eign countries.
The senators tentatively
trimmed two million dollars
from the millions asked by
Eisenhower and voted by the
house for administrative ex
penses of the international co
operation administration,
which administers the aid pro
gram. That left the Senate
measure at a tentative total
subject to possible revision
Friday of $3,945,000,000.
That was six million dollars
more than the President's
original request and 345 mil
lion dollars more than the
House voted.

Opens Campaign
Chicago (W Former
President Truman Thursday
night opened the Democrats'
congressional campaign with
a free-wheeling attack on the
Republicans for "alienating
our allies, stripping our na
tional defense and puncturing
world prosperity."
The 74-year-old ex-President,
although in a fighting
mood, appeared to lack some
of his customary zip in his
address before 2,600 party
faithful at a $100-a- plate
fund-raising dinner.
He called for the over
whelming election of a Demo
cratic congress to "save the
country" from an administra
tion that 'is dedicated to doing
nothing at all or only half
enough."
Truman charged the Eisen
hower administration is run
ning the nation's foreign af
fairs like an "overbearing
banker with a glass-eye." On
the home front, he said, the
GOP has achieved both reces
sion and inflation at the same
time.
