meeting of Troop 176 held
May 17 at the home of Mrs.
R. A. Anderson, assistant
leader.
Mrs. Gibbs, a member of
Southern Oregon Kennel club
and a member of the board of
the Humane society, talked
and gave a demonstration on
the care, safety and health of
cats and dogs.

ACUTE PANCREATITIS
I was just re-reading an ex
cellent article by my old
friend, the late Dr. M. W.
Comfort of the
Mayo Clinic,
who was an
expert in rec
ognizing and
treating this
disease. As he
said, "The se
vere, prolong
edpainful seizures (are)
the hall mark

of most cases of pancreatitis."
The pain is in the upper half
of the abdomen, and tends
often to come in the left up
per quadrant. It tends, also,
to run into the left side of
the back. Significant is the
fact that the pain often lasts
from six to 10 hours and is
poorly relieved by opiates. An
attack of gallstone colic would
last a much shorter time, and
would probably be stopped
by an injection of morphine.
Often with pancreatitis,
there will be a history of the
patient's having had in the
past several similar painful
episodes which lasted for from
two to seven days. Often, with
the attack, there were chills
and fever. Sometimes there
was a good deal of shock with
each spell. Frequently, also,
the physician was puzzled at
first, wondering if perhaps
the patient was suffering
from an acute heart attack,
or from the perforation of a
peptic ulcer. This possibility
can be ruled out usually by
getting an x-ray film of the
abdomen to see if there is any
air under the midriff. The x
ray film of the abdomen will
tend to rule out, also, any
intestinal obstruction if loops
of bowel are not distended
with gas. Heart disease may
be largely ruled out by the
presence of a normal electro
cardiogram. A definite indication of pan
creatitis is the presence in the
blood of large amounts of
the amylase and lipase which
are normally produced by the
pancreas. They are the. fer
ments which digest our
starches and fats. Sometimes
in the attack there will be a
marked increase, also, in the
amount of sugar in the blood,
due to injury to the cells in
the pancreas that make insu
lin. Unfortunately, the treat
ment of the condition is far
from satisfactory. To avoid
pancreatitis one should get
rid of troublesome gallstones,
and should not destroy one's
liver with alcohol.
Creams Containing
Ovarian Extracts
As women' know, creams
containing ovarian extract
are supposed to keep aging
skins young. Physicians have
wondered if this is true. At
first they feared that the ovar
ian extract might favor pro
duction of cancer, but this
fear appears now to have been
cleared away. Recently, Dr.

gen or ovarian extract can get
through the skin to produce a
generalized effect. He said,
"Clinical evidence to support
or contradict the opinion that
estrogen creams delay or re
verse the aging process in the
skin is meager. Any change
is likely to be quite subtle,
and to develop slowly."
"Twenty-seven women of va
ious ages applied an estrogen
cream to one side of their
face and plain cream to the
other side, for a period of 91
days. No difference could be
detected in the two sides of
the face."
The doctor's conclusion was
that one cannot say that the
cream does nothing for aging
skin, but, at the same time,
one has no evidence to prove
that it does.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nose by mail.
