SPEAK OF NIXON'S VISIT

The people of Rabat have a
" heritage of democracy but I
think that the visit of Vice
President Nixon here last
year has sharpened it. In any
event, the fevorable impres
sion he made here has done
nothing to make people less
cordial to me.
One Arab commented on it
favorably in telling me how
for nearly 200 years, in the
16th and 17th Centuries, Rab
at was a republic made up of
Spanish Moors who had been
driven out of Spain.
And a Frenchman I met
during a drive into the coun
try also commented favorably
on it.
The Frenchman was direct
ing a crew of men battling a
small locust horde on a side
road off the Casablanca high
way. As he told me how he
had seen Nixon greet the com
mon people on his way to the
Sultan's palace, he interrupt
ed himself to call on the
Prophet Mohammed for. as
sistance against the locusts.
The locusts were definitely
holding their own, and the
Frenchman explained that the
Prophet, as the Koran tells,
liked to eat the insects by the
basketfull.
I could appreciate his point.
The horde, though just a few
. hundred feet wide and may
be three times as long was
stripping the land of green.
And while that swarm could
be dealt with successfully
there was grave danger of
another.
Sometimes those that ap
pear on the west coast of
Africa keep on going right out
to sea. There are records of
locust hordes settling on ships
a thousands miles out in the
Atlantic. There is even reason
to believe that African locusts
have sometime succeeded in
reaching the West Indies as
well as South America.
Their flight is so powerful
the noise of their wings is
leafing. They can fly against
an eight-mile wind. And since
a horde can strip a date grove
to the bare palms, or a field
f wheat to the bare ground,
the sight of them on foot or
on wing is one of the most
kateful to men.

Bruce Davis of Fresno, Calif.,
who survived three days and
night near the wreckage of a
light plane in central Oregon,
underwent surgery Wednes
day for amputation of the toes I
on her right foot.
Irs. Davis suffered frost
bite and other injuries while
awaiting rescue. Last week
her left foot was amputated.
Her husband said she came
through today's operation in
fine shape and that both were
gratified she was able to keep
most of the right foot.
