Science Shrinks Piles
New Way Without Surgery
Finds Healing Substance That Relieve Pain.
Stops Itching as it Shrinks Hemorrhoids
Ifew York, N. Yf (Special) For the
first time science has found a new
healing substance with the aston
ishing ability to shrink hemor
rhoids, stop itching, and relieve
pain without surgery.
In case after case, while gently
relieving pain, actual reduction
(shrinkage) took place.
Most amazing of all results
were so thorough that sufferers
The Medical
Probably few people realize
how many years go into the
training of a good medical
specialist. Af
ter graduating
from high
school, the lad
(or young
woman) must
study three or
four years in
a university,
learning some
thing about
Dr. Alvarez the basic sci
ences," such as mathematics,
chemistry, physics, anatomy
(the structure of the body),
embryology (the growth of
the body in the womb), his
tology (the microscopice struc
ture of the body), physiology
(the functioning of the body),
and biochemistry (the chemis
try of the body).
After this, the student has
two years in which he is in
troduced to most of the basic
problems of medicine. Then,
for two years, he goes each
day into a big hospital and
studies disease in patients as
well as in books. After tha,
if he has done well, he probl
ably will graduate and get
his M.D. degree. In some
states, if next he passes his
state board examinations he
is licensed to go out and prac
tice medicince andx surgery.
Lives in Hospital
In a few universities he does
not get his M.D. until he has
had a year of internship, dur
ing which time he lives in a
hospital, and does much of
the examining and treating of
patients under the supervi
sion of the physicians on the
staff. As one can well imagine,
this intern year is likely to
be the most instructive of all
that the man has had so far.
It is during this year that the
young physician may decide,
and often does decide, what
specialty he is going to fol
low if any. When he leaves
the hospital, he can open an
office and do general practice,
or he can, make the big de
cision whether to work on to
ward a diploma in internal
medicine, surgery, or some
other one of the several spec
ialties. Some men (and wom
en) who, perhaps because of
their temperament, prefer not
to go out on their own to
build a private practice, will
go into any one of a number
of specialties in which they
can take a salaried position in
some institution. In such
work, they may not even see
patients.
Many of the best men, at
the end of their intern year,

His appeal came as the
White House published a re

achievement" of giving 64.5
million Americans under 40
years old one or more polio
vaccine injections during the
past four years.
The report noted, however
that many of the 46.5 million
people under 40 who have re
ceived no vaccine are young
sters who are "especially vul
nerable." The report was prepared by
Dr. David B. Allman, presi-i
dent of the American Medical
association; Basil O'Connor,
president of the National
Foundation for Infantile Par
alysis, and Dr. Leroy E. Bur
ney, U. S. surgeon general.
It noted that only 2,162
cases of paralytic polio were
reported for 1957, a decline of
73 per cent over the previous
year and 84 per cent over
1955. -

After that, a man who wants
to become a good specialist
must settle down for at least
three years in some good
teaching institution. After this
he may be permitted to take
his National Board examina

will give him a diploma, and
the right to practice as a
specialist.
Some surgeons, orthope

One can easily see why, to
day, many a young specialist
cannot hope to open his first
office until he is 30.
