Medical science has found a fast

pain of a .corn, and get rid of it

This treatment works by get
ting to the base of the problem. ,
It actually gets rid of your corn
by pushing it up from underneath.
The secret is a wonder drug
from the Blue-Jay laboratories
which took years to perfect.
That wonder drug is called
" Phenylium.
How BLUE-JAY Corn Plasters
relievo pain, remove corn
The Blue-Jay plaster consists of
a felt ring surrounding a pad with
Phenylium. The felt relieves the
pain of the corn by removing the
pressure and friction which
causes it. - '
Simultaneously, the Phenylium
goes to work to remove the source
of the pain the corn itself. It
penetrates through the tough,
horny skin of the corn to its base,
where it stimulates the growth of
new cell tissue.
In most corns, by the end of
the third day this new tissue has
grown to the point where it
can be lifted out.

Medical Director, National Tuberculosis Association
Are you one of those who think tuber
' culosis is wiped out, that nobody
dies from TB, and that you and
members of your family are in no danger
of contracting it?
No matter how well informed you think
you are, these questions and answers will
make an important difference in your life,
if they remind you to check with your
doctor to be sure you don't have TB.
Do people still die from TB? Yes, nearly
14,000 every year. Great progress has been
made in reducing the death toll from
almost 200 per 100,000 in 1900, to 8 per
100,000 in 1956. This has come about be
cause of steadily improved living condi
tions, stepped-up treatment, and an
intensive case-finding program. But more
people still die from tuberculosis each
year than from all other communicable
diseases combined.
What are my chances of catching TB?
Between 55 and 60 million Americans are
infected with the tubercle bacillus, the TB
germ. About two and a half million of
these will probably break down with
active tuberculosis during their lifetime.
Some 250,000 people in the U. S. now have
active TB, and about 90,000 new cases are
reported annually. The disease is spread
by people with active tuberculosis who
cough up the germ.
If I catch TB, will the new drugs cure me?
The new drugs make curing TB easier and
quicker, but you still might be ill. for
months, even years. The drugs are saving
many lives, but they still don't kill all the
germs; they only slow them down. Some
patients become resistant to the major
drugs, or do not respond to them for some
reason. Intensive research continues in
many laboratories across the country for
even more effective drugs.
Would I have to go to the hospital?
Almost all TB patients should spend at
least an initial period of several months
in the hospital, where skilled treatment,
modern laboratory facilities, and expert
nursing speed recovery. Patients usually
complete their recovery at home under a
doctor's care. Hospitalization is most im
portant to prevent spreading the con
tagious germs to others. 1
Is TB expensive? Yes, very expensive, for
you and your country and the commu
nity., Many states give free treatment to

THE TUBERCULIN TEST
This simple skin test can show
whether you have TB germs in
your body.
How it works all that is done is
to put some clear fluid called tu
berculin between layers of the
skin, usually on the forearm.
What it shows the place on the
skin will be examined from two
to four days later. When the doctor
or nurse has checked the size,
shape; and color of the mark, you
will be told one of two things:
1. Your test is neg
ative this means that your body
contains no TB germs, or
2. Your test is posi
tive this does not mean that you
have TB, but that germs have
entered your body at some time.
If your health is good, your body
usually keeps these germs from
doing any damage. However, you
should have a chest . X ray to
be sure.
TB
TB patients. This brings cases under con
trol and protects the public against the
germs. The cost for hospital care after
treatment and related family expenses
may total thousands of dollars. National
costs for TB treatment and control are
estimated at $725,000,000 annually, includ
ing hospitalization, medical care, public
health programs, and public assistance.
Can TB be prevented? No satisfactory
vaccine for universal use against TB has
yet been developed. BCG is the best
known vaccine. Though it is considered
safe and offers some protection against
tuberculosis, people already infected do
not benefit from BCG.
What are my chances of getting better
after TB? Excellent, if it is detected early
and you get proper treatment. You can
judge your chances from these figures:
Some 250,000 Americans now have active
TB. Although about 14,000 of them will
die each year, 1,750,000 people who once
had active TB are alive today.
Can I work after I've had TB? Nearly
always, but often people need vocational
training or help in finding an easier job.
One of the important parts , of TB treat
ment is helping patients find the right
kind of employment so they can avoid
breaking down again.
What are the chances of a relapse? One
of the tragedies of TB is that people who
have spent months or years recovering
do break down again. There are about
550,000 inactive cases in need of medical
supervision. An ex -patient has a good
chance of staying well if he lives sensibly
and gets proper help, and an excellent
chance if his TB was detected early.
How can I tell If I have TB? Even people
who have died of TB may not have known
they had it. In one out of five TB deaths,
the disease is not reported until afterward.
You may think symptoms like fever,
coughing, and loss of weight will warn
you, but these signs may not appear ( until
the disease has been with you quite a
while and then it is much harder to cure.
A yearly tuberculin test can reveal
whether the - germs have entered your
body. If they have, a chest X ray can tell
if they have started to do any damage.
What can I do to prevent catching TB?
Keep up your health and that of your
family to maintain high resistance to
tuberculosis. Get a yearly physical exam
ination. Youngsters especially should be
given the tuberculin test because of the
importance of early discovery. Get a chest
X ray if the tuberculin test is positive,
and as often as your physician recom
mends. Support the work of your health
department, local TB association, and
the others engaged in the fight against
tuberculosis.
How Is the fight against TB carried on?
-Fighting TB is a slow and costly job. Un
known victims are found through tuber
culin tests, chest X rays, and good public
health control work. They must be treated
with drugs, sometimes with surgery, and
always must have careful nursing. Patients
must be helped back to normal living.
They need help for their own sakes and
to avoid being a burden or a source of
danger to others. Your local tuberculosis
association helps to find people-with TB,
get them under treatment, and bring them
back to normal living. It also supports
research for new drugs and an effective
vaccine. This work is made possible by
your purchase of Christmas Seals.
How can I help fight TB? Continuous
public education is necessary to reach
many people in your community who have
misconceptions about TB. You can obtain
from your local TB ' association an in
formative film, "Are You Positive?" in
animation and color. It explains the mis
conceptions and the facts about TB. It
is available free for use by community
organizations schools, churches, women's
clubs, service clubs, and other civic
groups. Showings before such audiences
will help protect you, your family. and
friends, and the health of your com
munity as a whole.
