Even by Hollywood standards, Shirley MacLaine can only be called
unconventional and that's an understatement.

The movie producer fumed, the actor
forced a grin, the truck driver
held back a roaring insult. And
Shirley MacLaine, a pixie with magic
for befuddling and bewitching, went
blithely on her way, leaving behind
three new members of the "Oh, That
Woman Club!"
The producer in Shirley's tem
pestuous wake was Hal Wallis, who
had planned a sneak preview of Shir
ley's new Paramount film, "Hot Spell."
Only studio executives were supposed
to know about the showing, and it
seemed like a better-kept secret than
Bing Crosby's wedding. Then Wallis
noticed a bespectacled "housewife" in
the audience. No doubt about it
secrecy or not, the pert nose and saucy
eyes could belong only to his unpre
dictable star!
The polite actor? That would be
Glenn Ford, who co-starred with the
dancer-turned-actress in MGM's "The
Sheepman." Glenn 'is a rare breed, an
actor without superstitions that is, he
was until he met Shirley, who noticed
his shocking habit of walking under
ladders on the set. Shirley perched
herself atop one ladder and, armed
