" nce again Benjamin Franklin watches fellow patriots sign the
Declaration of Independence, his lined and genial face reflecting
deep personal satisfaction. An air of menace returns to a theater
box occupied by Abraham Lincoln and his wife as John Wilkes Booth,
enters quietly behind them. And the solemnity of Appomattox is felt in
the proud figures of Grant and Lee, meeting on that fateful day.
Time is arrested, but life and motion seem to remain in the wax
tableaus created for a new museum in Washington, D. C, where great
figures of past and present are captured in their most historic moments.
For Europeans, the wax museum is a familiar mirror for the past, but
until now Americans have had few institutions that tried to match the
standards. of t say, MadameTussaud-'s-inLonrinn, The-Washington exhibit,
however, has captured the spirit as well as the appearance of its person-.
alities the native shrewdness of John D. Rockefeller, for example, and
the happy-go-lucky outlook of Babe Ruth.
Molders, wigmakers, and various other craftsmen have contributed
their realistic touches, from the jaunty angle of Winston Churchill's cigar
to the bushy eyebrows of Oliver Wendell Holmes and the sturdy stance
of Jim Thorpe.
Opened in March, the Washington museum already has given its
proprietors a strange intimacy with history. Mrs. Frank Dennis, wife of
the museum's president, removes Robert E. Lee's hat and finds herself
mumbling, "Excuse me, General . . ." Cathron Trepagnier, daughter of the
manager, catches herself smiling back at Franklin D. Roosevelt.
There is nothing eerie about these experiences, they say. Like visitors
to the wax museum, they simply have come to see history in terms of
human beings, rather than shadows and legends.
