'Side Effects'
Of Drive Seen
Noticeable favorable "side
effects" to the "You Auto Buy
Now" campaign conducted
May 1 to 10 by Medford auto
dealers have been reported as
a result of the sales program,
those in charge said Thursday.
As examples, they cited a
jewelry store which had a
business increase of 28 per
cent during the 10-day period
compared to the first 10 days
in May last year; and a men's
clothing store which was 9.75
per cent behind in its April
business, but which picked up
during the May 1 to 10 period
to a point 23.1 per cent ahead
of last vear.
A Medford department store
reported the first 10 days in
May ran 34 per cent ahead of
the first 10 days of April, and
that the May 1 to 10 period
was 18 per cent above the
same period a year ago, which
was 10 per cent over the
normal seasonal increase.
Auto service business ran
an average of 27 per cent
higher than the first 10 days
of May in 1957, the reports
indicated.

Confectionery Workers un
ion has negoiated the largest
package wage increase in the
history of the industry on the
Pacific Coast.
The tentative agreement
calls for total wage increases
of $10.25 a week by next May
1 for 18,000 bakery workers
in California, Oregon and
Washington. .
Workers in San Francisco,
Fresno and Long Beach are
not affected. Locals in those
cities joined the AFL-CIO
sponsored American Bakery
and Confectionary - Workers
union after the IBCW was ex
pelled on corruption charges.
The new pay scale calls for
a $3.50 weekly raise retro
active to the first of this
month; a $3.50 increase next
Feb. 1 and $3.25 next May 1.
The scale for workers now is
$95.70 for a 35-hour week.

was 44. One would think she
might have gotten the prize
for the biggest ovarian tumor
ever removed, but no; hers
was only the 13th largest re
ported. I always marvel at the psy
chology of a person will
go on for many years dragging
around a tumor like that.
