Oregon Beef
Council Urged

the closing session of the '
Oregon Cattlemen's associa
tion convention here.
Oregon cattlemen recently
turned down a beef commis
sion in a referendum. A big
difference between the pro
posed council and the com
mission is that the .latter
would require cattleman pay j
a 10 -cent per h e a d ' assess- j
ment on cattle sold. The coun
cil calls for a voluntary fi
nancing plan of 10 cents per
head.
Three cents of the 10 cents
would go to the National Live
stock and Meat Board and the
rest for promotion and mar
keting of Oregon beef.
Cattlemen also urged con
tinuance of the current bru
cellofis eradication program.
In another resolution they
called for formation of a cat
tle feeders organization to be
set up under auspices of the
Oregon Cattleman's associa
tion. They said the cattle feed
ing industry was expanding
in Oregon and producers and
feeders share many of the
same problems.
The group meets at Red
mond this fall with the 1959
convention in Portlands

Swedish Prince
Visits Portland
Portland (IP) Prince Bertil
of Sweden arrived here Wed
nesday afternoon in the offi
cial car of Gov. Albert Rosel
lini of Washington.
Escorting him from Tacoma
in the governor's car was
Washington State Patrol Sgt.
Don Daniels, known as an
excellent driver. But driving
the big car as it pulled up to
the Multnomah Hotel in down
town Portland was Prince
Bertil. Sgt. Daniels disclosed
that the prince had driven
all the way from Tacoma. Said
the sergeant: "He's a marvel
ous driver."
The 46-year-old bachelor
prince had no trouble staying
on the right side of the road,
although vehicles drive on
the left side in Sweden.
Prince Bertil was presented
with a bouquet of yellow
roses by Judy Frykman,
daughter of Swedish Vice
Consul Malcolm Frykman,
and a box of red roses for
his garden in Stockholm by
Hubert Goode and Arthur
Carlson of the Royal Rosari
ans. Portland booster group.
The prince was guest of
honor at a reception, banquet
and ball in the Rose Bowl
room of the Multnomah Hotel l
Wednesday night. . He was
scheduled to motor to Salem
today for luncheon with Gov.
and Mrs. Robert D. Holmes.
He was due to leave for San
Francisco at 6:05 p.m. today.
