Assistance in Survey

cil on Aging has asked resi
dents between 35 and 65
years old to participate in a
statewide survey of those peo
ple who were rejected jobs
because they were told they
were too old.
Dr. Wesley G. Nicholson,
chairman of the committee,
said only those residents who
have been refused work be
cause of their age should take
part in the survey.

name, age, address and the
type of occupation or business
that refused the person a job
because of age and when,
should be sent to Oregon
State Council on Aging, post
office box 5197, Eugene.
Council Informed .
Dr. Nicholson pointed out
that the Council has been in
formed that many persons be
tween 35 and 65 have been
turned down for jobs because
of their age, but the Council
has no funds to conduct a
state survey. If enough per
sons have been turned down,
then the problem needs to be
studied by the group, he
noted.

Ashland Highway
Project Listed
Ashland Funds totaling
5150,000 have been allocated
by the state highway commis
sion for work on Highway 99
in Ashland, according to E. C
Biegel, city superintendent.
He said the work would
consist of narrowing the cen
ter strip and widening the
highway arterials, between
East Main andAvery sts. Two
traffic lanes and one parking
lane are planned on each side
of the highway, Biegel noted.
Ashland will install an SI 8,
000 street lighting system in
connection with the highway
project, he added.
Rubber-coated rayon bags,
holding 3,800 gallons, are
used to enable truck trailers
to carry liquids as well as
solid materials. Various lin
ings make the bags suitable
for corrosive, edible or other
liquids. ,

Concedes Defeat

nis Chavez, in "his 24th year
as senator from New Mexico,
passed the first hurdle in his
bid for reelection when his
opponent conceded defeat in
the Democratic primary short
ly before midnight Tuesday.
Chavez, 70, polled 57,686
votes to 31,177 for his oppon
ent, E. S. Walker, former
state land commissioner. The
votes were from 684 of the
930 voting places.
Paris (IP! Premier Pierre
Pflimlin today ordered Gen.
Raoul Salan. French com
mander in Algeria,' to take
charge of insurrection-ridden
Algiers and restore order.
The move followed shortly
after President Rene Coty de
manded loyalty from the 400,
000 French troops in Algeria
where a military-civilian jun
ta seized power with a "com
mittee of public safety" and
urged Gen. Charles de Gaulle
to head up a new strong man
government in Paris. New
disorders appeared to be
shaping up in the wake of
riots in Paris and Algiers
Tuesday.
Prohibit Demonstrations
Pflimlin and his Cabinet
also decided today, to prohibit
all , public demonstrations in
Paris and in cities and towns
throughout the French main
land. More than 10,000 police
and riot troops stood guard
at strategic spots around Pa
ris during the day to put
teeth into the government's
order.
The fast-developing events
came as France appeared
close to civil war.
The order from Pflimlin,
came a few hours after' he
won approval from ' the Na-
I tional Assembly as the coun
try's 27th postwar premier, at ,
least temporarily giving
France a government to cope
with one of its gravest politi
cal crises to date.
Assuming Powers
The Pflimlin order was is
sued here shortly after Salan
himself had announced in Al
giers that he was assuming
"provisional" civil and mili
tary powers throughout the
North African territory.
But even as the Pflimlin
government was acting to ease
the situation, new anti-government
demonstrations were
shaping up in Algiers. By
mid-morning a crowd of 2,000
was milling outside the
French Command Headquar
ters there and nearly every
store in the city was shut for
the second day in a row. The
milling crowd was reported
growing larger every minute.
In Algiers, Gen. Jacques Mas
su, tough veteran paratrooper,
called the Pflimlin cabinet a
"government of abandon
ment." Massu said his defiant
army group would keep con
trol of Algeria "until final
victory."
Massu, apparently with the
backing of Salan, broadcast
over Algiers Radio this morn
ing a violent speech in which
he apparently closed all exits
for a peaceful settlement.
RETIRED DIRECTOR DIES
White Plains, N.Y. (in
Paul W. Barnett, 64, a retir
ed vice president, secretary
and director of Row, Peterson
and company, textbook pub
lishers, died Tuesday of a
heart attack. A native of
Memphis, Mo., Barnett was a
teacher and principal in Mis
souri schools before joining
the firm in 1918.

the conductor. "Colonel
Watterson happens to be in
the next car forward. We'll
see if he can identify you.
The journalist figured the jig was up, but to his surprise,
the colonel nodded, "Yes, that's my man Smith, Sit down here,
my boy." When the defeated conductor departed, Smith
started to say thank-you, but his companion silenced him.
"Compose yourself," he smiled. "I'm not Colonel Watterson.
I'm traveling on a borrowed pass, too!"
