Pacifists Request
Order Set Aside
San Francisco (Ul Four
pacifists forbidden to sail
their 30-foot ketch from Hono
lulu to Eniwetok to protest
the current atomic tests have
asked a U.S. appeals court to
set aside the order.
Through attorney A. L.
Wirin, the crewmen of the
Golden Rule asked the ap
peals court Monday to either
modify the order handed
down by Federal Judge Jon
Wiig of Honolulu, or to lift it.
Wirin said the injunction is
illegal since it abridges the
crew's "constitutional alght to
travel on the high seas."
The court will hear argu
ments on May 21.
The four pacifists were
found guilty of contempt last
week for trying to sail for
Eniwetok despite the court
order forbidding them to.
Bock Stairs: How Big Is a Billion?
By DAYTON MOORE
United Press Correspondent
Washington (IF) Back
stairs at the White House:
President Eisenhower be
gan dealing in large figures
during World War II and has
been at it on and off ever
since. Billions have been his
diet more or less since he en
tered the White House.
But he readily admits he
still has great difficulty com
prehending' how big a billion
is . He said in a speech last
week that the nation is re
placing its trees at a rate of
one billion a year. Then he
did gome pencil mathamatics
to break it down a bit and
came up with 30 trees a sec
ond. . MI can understand 30 a sec
ond really easier than I can
a billion a year," he said.
For the first time since he
became president, the Presi
dent was greeted at a public
gathering last week by some
thing other than the usual
riffles and flourishes and
"Hail To The. Chief."
Republican congressmen,
accompanied by an organ,
sang "My Old Kentucky
Home" when the President
made his entrance at their
dinner meeting. He was half
way to his seat at the head
table before most of the din
ers realized he had entered
the room.
The organist finally switch
ed to "The Stars And Stripes
Forever." If the President
noticed the switch, he didn't
show it in the least. He stood
at attention until the last
note died out, just as he
would have done if it had
been the usual "Hail To The
Chfef."
The President Joined heart
ily in the community sing
preceding the dinner. The

songs included such old fa
vorites as "Sweet Adeline."
"Pack Up Your Troubles,"
and "I Want a Girl."
Eisenhower apparently en
joys singing and usually joins
in when hymns are sung
when he goes to church.
Is he a baritone or tenor?
An aide said with a grin that
he hesitates at putting the
President's voice in a musical
classification. But he guessed
it was a "sort of baritone."
Since he became president,
Eisenhower has described
three hymns as his favorites:
"Lead Kindly Light," "Oh
God, Our Help In Ages Past."
and "A Mighty Fortress Is
Our God."
An aide said there are sev
eral others that could be class
ed as presidential favorites
The President was said to be
dubious about designating
any one song or hymn as his
favorite because it might be
played too often as "Home On
The Range" was for Franklin
D. Roosevelt and "The Mis
souri Waltz" for Harry S.
Truman.
White House newsmen
greeted Presidental Press Sec
retary James C. Hagerty Fri
day with a warm if not
particularly tuneful "Hap
py Birthday." It was his 49th.
The reporers also gave Hag
erty a framed sign intended
to help him keep his Irish
temper under control. It said:
"It ain't what you eat that
gives you ulcers, it's what
eats you."
The reporters also remem
bered another White House
occupant on her third birth
day. They gave Heidi, the
President's Weimaraner, a
can of dog food. The card was
signed "Fala," the name of
President Roosevelt's famed
Scottie.

Comment Declined
On Powell Probe
. Washington (IP) The Jus
tice Department declined to
comment Monday night on
charges it tried to side-track
the grand jury investigations
of Rep. Adam Clayton Powell
Jr. (D-N.Y.) on income tax
charges.
- The jury last Thursday in
dicted the Negro congressman
on three counts of tax eva

New York on Friday.
Thomas A. Bolan, a former
assistant U.S. attorney in New
York, accused the department
of once trying to call off the
grand jury's inquiry because
"it was too hot to handle."
A department spokesman
said any comment o,n Bolan's
charge "will have to come
from Attorney General Wil
