Washington IW Dough
in one form or another is
tops on the gift list of U.S.
servicemen overseas, the Red
Cross learned in a recent poll.
"The guys who don't want
it in the form of a postal
monev order would like it in
the shape of homemade cakes
or cookies," said one soldier
in Europe.
Money orders, the Red
Cross said are easier to cash
than checks, since a fee is
generally charged for checks.
The servicemen stressed
that thev Drefer their fresh-
from-the-oven delicacies indi
vidually wrapned in tin foil.
nacked carefully in metal con
tainers, and shipped by air
mail. This, avoids the disap
oointment of finding crumbs
instead of finding Mom's spe
cial brownies.
Other items on the most
wanted list are hometown
newsDaner subscriptions, mag
azines, and photographs of the
kids and pets.
Gifts of a "local" flavor
ranee from skindivine and
fishing equipment for the Car
ibbean area to jackets and
cameras for Alaska.
Two Universal dislikes are
cigarettes and any items which
smack of the military. A serv
iceman in Turkey reported
however, that "what this
country needs is a good cigar."
In Europe, the list of arti
cles labelled most undesir
able include watches, ties,
cameras, and sporting goods.
All can be obtained at the PX
at lower prices than prevail
at home.

Source of Eel
Power Described
Seattle. Wash. HP) A re
searcher at the University of
Washington Medical School
thinks he knows where elec
tric eels get the shocking
power with which to stun
their Drev.
T)r. John Luft, who report
ed on electron - microscope
studies he made of shock-producing
tissues of electric eels,
exDlained that the sea ani
mals us about three-fifths of
their body length as an elec
tricity-producing organ.
He said "battery" tissues in
eels are specialized modifica
tions of ordinary muscle tis
sue, which are arranged so
that the electrical output of
individual cells is discharged
cumulatively instead of sepa
rately.
Electrical impulses are a
feature of all living cells," Dr.
Luft said, "and every mus
cle-fiber cell has a small elec
tric Dotential across it ofi
about one-tenth of a volt."
But in eels, he explained,
the electric cells are arranged
"so that the batteries can
be said to be Svired in series'
to apply the total shocking
effect."
"In this way," he said,
"5,000 cells in a row along
the eel's tail create a shock
ing power of 500 volts."
An eel produces enough
electricity to light an electric
light bulb intermittently,
