Festival Crowd
Boos 'Karamazov'

festival audience greeted Hol
lywood's verision of "The
Brothers Karamazov" with
boos, catcalls and whistles on
Sunday night.
It then cold-shouldered two
of its stars, Yul Brynner and
Claire Bloom.
Filmgoers, who had jam
med the 1,200 seat festival
theater in gala evening dress,
turned icily away from Bryn
ner and Miss Bloom after the
show when they stood up in
their first-row balcony seats

A few polite mutterings of
applause were drowned out
by boos, and catcalls.
Many of the fans stood up
in their seats and shook their
fists. Cries of "ridiculous,"
"absurd," and "shameful,"
could be plainly heard.
The movie had been wide
ly publicized here as a mas
terpiece but critics thought
it fell flat.
Most thought changes made
. in the complicated plot were
bad, particularly the addition
" of a typical hppy Hollywood
ending.
Heavy Police Guard

guard mounted 24-hour, watch
at Jane Mansfield's hotel Sat
urday after an Italian photog
rapher was discovered hiding
in her clothes closet.
The photographer, whose
name was not revealed, was
discovered by Jayne's hus
band, muscle - man Mickey
Hargitay.
Police said the photogra
pher told them he had hoped
to get some "very exclusive"
pictures of the buxom Holly
wood actress who is here to
attend the film festival.
But police were no more
amused than Hargitay. They
doubled the regular guard in
front of the hotel and asked
for a security riot trooper to
be stationed outside Jayne's
room at all -times. .
The first talking movie was
'Don Juan" which Warner
(Brothers released in 1926. The
sound was on synchronized
phonograph records.
