"I must make a list of things
the baby will need," she told Don
that evening. "There are quite a
few of Melinda's and Richard's
that will do."
"And I'll get out the crib and
look it over," Don said.
After dinner, when the children
were in bed, they went down and
got out the crib. "I suppose I
could make new sides for it," Don
said. "And we could get a new
mattress," Jennie added.
But they just didn't seem to
have any interest in doing it,
somehow. They put the small bed
aside and went back up to the
living room. "I'll get at it next
week end," Don said.
On Saturday morning, though,
they decided to drive out to the
new State Park. And that was
the way it went: something com
ing up every week end until sud
denly it was the end of August,
time for school to begin.
One afternoon after school had
started, Jennie took out the stack
of small clothes and studied the
yellow dress in which Melinda
had looked so cherubic. "It won't
do!" she said forcibly. "It simply
will not do!"
She was astounded at how
definitely she knew it wouldn't
do." "Yet why won't it do?" she .
asked herself. "It's a perfectly
good dress."
"Why," she said, "it won't do
for this baby. It was all right for
Melinda, but this baby is differ
ent. Nor is this right," she
thought as she took up a dress
that had been Richard's.
"Well, then," Jennie asked her
self, "what is right for this baby?"
She got out a magazine and began
to leaf through the pages of
children's clothes. "This is right,"
she told herself, when she came
to an abbreviated dress with a
small collar.
She began to hum to herself as
she considered tucks instead of
embroidery. She got paper and
pencil and began to list what the
baby would need special things,
things of its own.
It was the oddest feeling: it
was as though he was already
.present, demanding clothes to fit
his own personality. The baby
was not to be like Melinda, nor
Richard, but only like himself. .
That Saturday Don worked on
the crib, and when Jennie went
to get him for lunch he said, "I'm
thinking of changing . the whole
design. Somehow the headboard
doesn't seem right."
"You, too?" Jennie asked, al
most in a whisper.
"What do you mean, me too?"
"This baby already is an indi
vidual to you, too, isn't he?" Jen
nie asked. "As though he has al
ways been " She tried to put it
into words. "This baby won't take
anything away from me, from
you, or from any of us. He will
make his own place."
"You're over my head, hon,"
Don said. "But if you mean am I
. adjusted to the idea of another
baby, the answer is yes. And if
you mean it won't change any
thing between you and me, or be
tween us and the other children,
the answer is yes, too."
"In other words," Jennie
laughed, "he's already himself.
And that's just fine, because
you'll always be you and I'll al
ways be me "
She looked at the headboard
of the crib. "It's beginning to look
