". . . Until Death De Us Part." Waiting my turn in the doctor's office, I
noticed an elderly couple sitting opposite me. They were so old and frail,
so wrapped in an aura of affection for each other, it was
strangely moving. He kept smiling tenderly at her, and
she constantly reached out to pat his arm reassuringly.
When the nurse came for her, the old gentleman rose,
too. "Do you wish tar go with her?" the nurse asked.
"Always," he replied. "To the very end." F. E. Huston,
Orlando, Fla.
The Benevolent Taskmaster. Our 10-year-old son came
home from school late one day and explained casually,
"I have to stay after school every day this week."
Thinking he must have done something pretty bad,
I asked, "What happened?"
"Oh, I didn't get my work in on time."
Relieved, but still wondering, I said, "I've heard your
teacher is pretty strict."
He shrugged. "She isn't so bad."
"Then you like her a little?"
His eyes twinkled as he replied, "Yeah! She's got a
lot of laughs to her." 1
Silently, I blessed an understanding teacher who could
punish so a lesson was learned, but still leave a young
heart laughing. Mrs. Glennon Bass, Monett, Mo.
Verdict Overruled. I know a young polio victim who, when first afflicted,
was told he would never walk again. But he did! Little by little, with
the aid of crutches and braces, he developed amazing control over his
twisted body. People who knew the doctors' verdict asked his mother
how the miracle happened. She replied, "The doctors told him he would
never walk again, but God never did and God is the only one who
knows." Lena Anken Sexton, lnkom, Idaho.
Calls of Kindness. While vacationing last Summer, I visited my married
sister in Indiana. At dinnertime she went to the door to call her three
children, who were out playing. Instead of hearing their names called
individually, I heard three short, low whistles. Later I asked the reason.
"Oh," she said, "whistles aren't nearly as disturbing to the neighbors
as shouting their names every night." Mrs..DJ., Lynchburg, Va.
A Full Life Is Never Spent. My
husband and I came home
recently after visiting our
daughter and her family, and
we were both aware more
than ever of the loneliness of our house now that the children were gone.
Feeling outdated and useless, we entered the dining room. There on
the table was a platter of food and a note, "Grab a bite and
come on over there's a pot of coffee waiting."
It was from our neighbors. After driving all day, the food was
welcome and their thoughtfulness even more so. It made us realize
that there are still many things old folks can do to make life
more pleasant for others if we just quit feeling sorry for ourselves
and look around. Mrs. P.R., Houston, Tex.
